Lady Yoe dominate Hearne to pick up first 20-3A win

Sometimes a confidence boost is just what a team needs to begin a winning streak.  On Friday from the Mark Humble Softball Complex, Cameron did just about everything right in a 15-0 thrashing of Hearne in a 4-inning run rule.  

“We were disciplined at the plate, got some hits and did what we needed to do to get the win,” said head coach Abe Vargas.   “I told the ladies we needed to get some work out of this game.  We went four innings and that was good for our pitchers. 

Cameron used two pitchers in the game, with Maddy Humble going the first three, giving up no hits, walking none and striking out three.  Madison Brunson relieved Humble in the fourth and gave up no hits and struck out one.  Together, the combo gave up no hits, walked none and struck out four in the perfect game bid. 

More importantly, Cameron (1-2) picked up their first district win while keeping Hearne (0-3) winless in 20-3A play. 

“It is really big,” said Humble on the win.  “It is going to help us in district because we do have a win now and we can obviously do it.”  “That first district win is what we needed,” added Vargas.

Humble got plenty of help early on as Cameron scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning before taking the foot off the gas pedal.  The ladies did reach base via the hit seven times, but also showed patience at the plate with 14 walks. 

Eight of the nine starters for the Lady Yoe scored a run and Ashlee Balch and Kenzie Wimmer both drove in two runners. 

After the game, Vargas said that his team is better than its 1-2 mark and believes that this could be the start of a prolonged winning streak.

“I think so.  Our ladies know that we are a lot better than what we have been playing the past two games.  We are going to have to play at the level we know we can play at.”

Franklin

On Tuesday, the Lady Yoe bats went cold as the Lady Lions produced a no-hitter in the process of picking up a 6-0 win.

The ladies had very few opportunities to get anything going as only 2 base on balls and 1 error allowed for runners to reach base and prevent the perfect game.  Yoe starting pitcher Maddy Humble did have an admirable outing from the circle.  The junior threw 6 innings, giving up 4 earned runs, walking none and striking out 3. 

Cameron was scheduled to play Lexington on Monday, but field conditions forced the move to Wednesday.  We will have a full report on that game plus Tuesday’s contest at Rogers in next week’s edition of sports.
