Yoemen rally to beat Lexington, fall late in heavyweight battle with Rogers

The Cameron Yoemen ran their win streak to 10 games in a row in dramatic fashion by scoring eight runs in the final three innings of a 8-4 win over Lexington last Thursday.

Things were not looking good early as Lexington jumped on Cameron with 1 in the first and 3 in the second to take a 4-0 lead. That advantage held up until 2 Yoemen runs in the fifth, 2 in the sixth and 4 in the seventh completed the comeback.

“We just told them to relax and focus,” said head baseball coach John Broussard on his message to the team on falling behind early. “They had a guy throwing that was keeping us off-balance up there. We told them to be real selective. You might get one pitch and you need to square it up. When we scored the two in the fifth, it kind of energized us and got us motivated.”

Yoe starting pitcher Bryce Brashear has been effective in most of his outings on the year, but did not have his sharp control, going just 1.1 innings while giving up 3 earned runs. Luckily for Cameron, the rotation is deep as Zack Andress stepped onto the hill and never allowed another run.

“He did a heck of a job,” said Broussard on Andress. “He came in a tough situation and stopped the bleeding right there and gave us a good chance to win. He did a great job. I am glad our guys rallied to that.”

The junior tossed 5.2 innings, giving up 3 hits and 0 runs while striking out 5.

“I just knew that I had to shut them out and not let them on the board,” added Andress. “We have a good offense and we just had to get started. Once we got started and rolling, I knew if I kept them off the board, we'd be good.”

Andress also sparked the offensive run with a 2-RBI triple in the fifth to open the scoring. With one out in the sixth, Brashear doubled to center. An Alex Alonso single followed by a a Keaton Hundle single tied the game up.

In the 7th, a Caden Harris triple scored Andress to put Cameron up for the first time. With the bases loaded, Alonso was hit by a pitch to push the lead to 6-4. A Hundle single pushed across the final two runs.

Rogers

It was the game the everyone had been looking forward to. Both Cameron and Rogers were a perfect 3-0 in district and the lead in 20-3A was on the line. As expected, we got a close game as the Eagles protected their home field in a 4-2 win.

Yoe starting pitcher Jason Llanas went the distance, but it was the Eagles that came up with the timely hits in a 3-run fifth. Cameron left the bases loaded in the top half of the fifth and had the tying runs on base in the seventh before a pair of strikeouts ended the rally.
