Chamber Basketball tourney begins today

One of the most highly anticipated sporting events in Cameron begins today and runs through Friday. A total of 12 boys and 12 girls teams from all across the state will be traveling to Cameron for two full days of basketball in the Chamber Christmas Classic.

The Teams

Girls

Pool A: Cameron, Florence, Austin Lanier

Pool B: Austin Crockett, Iola, West

Pool C: Holland, McGregor, Austin Travis

Pool D: Buffalo, Rosebud-Lott, Snook

The girls division features a variety of teams from across the area, a few from the Austin area, and even defending state finalist Buffalo. Cameron will play their pool games at 11:30 (Florence) and 5:30 (Lanier).

Boys

Pool A: Cameron, Snook, McGregor

Pool B: Giddings, Taylor, Marble Falls

Pool C: Academy, Smithville, Holland

Pool D: Rockdale, Shoemaker JV, Whitney

For the boys, defending champ Marble Falls will be returning, as will Snook, who finished runner up in 2016. Rockdale is returning after a one-year absence. Cameron will play their pool games at 1:00 (Snook) and 7:00 (McGregor).

Ticket prices: Student 2-day is $8.00 and a 1-day pass is $6.00. An adult two-day pass is $12.00 and a 1-day pass is $8.00. There will be no passes accepted for this tournament. We will have a full breakdown of the teams and pools in next week’s edition of sports.

More winter sports just around the corner

The temperatures may be continuously dropping, but more Yoe sports are starting to heat up. At the beginning of January, both Yoe powerlifting and soccer will get their seasons underway. Powerlifters will officially start competing on January 6 in the annual Yoe Classic meet. Lady Yoe soccer will travel to Robinson on January 2 for a scrimmage and will open the season at the Waller tournament from January 4-6. Yoe soccer will scrimmage Salado on December 29 and Robinson on January 2, and will be in the Jarrell tournament from January 4-6.

Jaguars lose, Westbrook has solid day

The Jacksonville Jaguars may have lost Sunday’s game versus San Francisco, but not

everything turned out negative as the team clinched the AFC South title with a Tennessee loss. In addition, rookie receiver Dede Westbrook had another admirable showing, catching 4 passess for 74 yards in the 44-33 defeat. In just five games, Westbrook has now increased his season total to 26 receptions for 330 yards and 1 touchdown. Jacksonville will close the regular season with a divisional game at the Titans. Kickoff is set for 3:25.

Wrestling competes in Bryan

Yoe wrestlers competed in the Doc Hess Invitational over the weekend in Bryan. Below is a report from Coach Dale Keen.

“We had a great tournament at Bryan High School. It was two days before Christmas, but we went anyway because they have different divisions. Zach Hafley won the rookie division. That is two years in a row that we had someone win the rookie division. Domanique Borgas did last year.

My girls wrestled in the varsity division because it was the only one for them. Ebonique House won two matches out of four. She was really sick and probably should not have been wrestling. The other two found it tough going, but it was a tough tournament.

Alfredo Ramos wrestled very well in the varsity division. He is our only varsity wrestler and has been wrestling now for over two years. He made a rookie mistake in his first match but came back and won a really tough match. In his third match he wrestled well and was leading, and only lost by one. We walked away feeling like he won.

We are missing several people because of sickness.”
