Lady Yoe fall hard to Franklin, snatch one from Lexington on the road

Franklin

Sometimes a team just seems to have your number.  For the Lady Yoe, that seems to be the case with Franklin.  Cameron did not have much luck on the road versus the Lady Lions earlier this season, falling 67-27.  Not much changed at home on Friday, as Franklin built a commanding 30-7 lead at the half and breezed the rest of the way to the 63-21 win.

The three was once again important for the Franklin, which nailed nine long-range shots compared to Cameron’s one.  In total, Franklin’s three-point shooting outscored Cameron alone, 27-21.

The shooting woes plagued Cameron the entire first half as Franklin sat at 12-23 at the break while Cameron was just 2-13.

Terryn Adams did provide a spark in the third with two field goals and 6 total points.

Lexington

Losing streaks are no fun.  In January, Cameron had lost eight straight district games and had one final chance to get into the win column on the road at Lexington on Tuesday.

During the losing streak, Cameron had many close ones not go their way, but that changed in this game.  Fast forward to late in the fourth quarter with the score tied at 37. Lexington had the chance to take the lead with two free throws, but could not convert on either.  On the other end, Marly Spink ended up with an offensive rebound and was fouled with just 4.5 seconds left.

The sophomore calmly sank the first free throw, and collectively the team did not allow Lexington to get another shot to pull off the road win, 38-37.

Spink kept the thought process simple despite all the outside noise: “I have to make these shots, as the team was depending on me,” said the 5’9” center.

“It was very tense,” said Lady Yoe coach Corey Cunningham on the big free throws.  “I give Marly a lot of credit.  During the timeout, she was the leader.  She wanted it and all of the girls wanted it.”

In addition to the game-winning free throw, you could also look back to the hot start Cameron had out of the gate, scoring 16 of their 38 points in the opening eight minutes. Adams had eight of her team-high 12 points in the period.  Qua Workman and Lauryn Leftwich each pitched in with a pair of baskets.

For Cunningham and his team, it was somewhat of a relieving win after falling short in so many previous district matches.

“It was huge, because we have been close and in this spot before,” said the coach.  “I told the girls nothing can cure that losing streak like a win.  They did what they had to do and we had players step up for us when others fouled out.”
