The Cameron Independent School District Board of Trustees approved the contracts of three administrators during a meeting Feb. 12.
Contracts for Assistant Superintendent Susan Pommerening; campus principals Joe Oliver, Wendy Mahan and Terry Dawson; assistant principals Brian Stork, James Henderson, Laci Rasberry and Beau Sanchez; and Athletic Director Tommy Brashear were approved by the board.
Superintendent Allan Sapp discussed the possibility of opening Pre-K to all students during his report to the board. Sapp told the board he did a study of what it would look like to allow all 4-year-olds to attend Pre-K. He said with the numbers now, the district would inherit 20 more students next year and that there would be no need for more staff. He said there would be a need for an additional $19,000 in expense to the district. The additional cost to add all 3-year-olds would be a lot higher. The board will discuss the topic at its next meeting on March 19.
Sapp also updated the board on safety concerns from the shooting that occurred on Jan. 26 on North Fannin. He said that there were students out on the football field that heard gunshots and told Coach Brashear about it who in turn told principal Joe Oliver. Oliver called Sapp and Sapp said that by the time he called the police the subject was already in custody.
Sapp said there was a lockdown at Ben Milam that day.
“Any time there is an incident involving a shooting even if it is off campus that is very serious stuff,” Sapp said. “If he had not been apprehended so quickly we would have had what we call a lock out at every campus.”
Sapp updated the board on the work of the Cameron Connection committee. He said the committee is narrowing down the topic to work on and will focus on literacy in Cameron ISD.
In other business the board also hear reports on benchmark testing from campus principals and Assistant Superintendent Susan Pommerening; set the March board meeting for March 19; and approved out-of-state travel request from the Yoe High Band to go to Orlando over Spring Break next school year.
