Yoe blasts Connally in baseball opener

You generally don’t see a ton of baseball teams execute in all three phases of the game to begin a new season.  In his first game as the head coach of the Yoemen, Hector Delgadillo could not have asked for more from his team as they hit, pitched and played defense at a high level in a 15-2, 5-inning rule rule victory over Waco Connally.  

Cameron’s ace from a season ago, Jason Llanas, got the nod on the mound.  The junior had an all-around complete game, tossing four innings, giving up two hits, one earned run while striking out 11 and walking none.  Llanas also led his team at the plate, finishing a perfect 4-4 with a double, triple, two runs scored and five runs driven in. 

Llanas began the game with what is somewhat of a rare event - a four-strikeout frame.  The opening two batters went down looking and swinging. Cadet three-hole Martin Guanajuato also struck out swinging, but reached on what was a passed ball.  Devin Pullin proceeded to single to left before Llanas got Josh Coker on a foul-tip for the third out of the inning.  

In the bottom half of the first, Llanas tripled to center, scoring Brashear, which had walked to begin the inning.  Garrett Roeder also singled in a run as Cameron led 4-0.  

Llanas struck out three more in the second, giving him seven through two. 

Llanas then doubled to bring in Kadrian Hammond and Zack Andress in the second, increasing the lead to 6-0.  

Connally scored one on a passed ball in the third, but Cameron pushed across four more in the bottom half of the third and five in the fourth. 

Roeder, the clean-up batter, was 3-4 with one run and one RBI, Rick Fuentes was 1-2 with two runs scored, and Hammond was a perfect 2-2 with one walk and three runs scored.  

Bryce Brashear pitched the fifth inning, giving up one hit, no runs and struck out one.  

Marion Tournament

Cameron will play in their first of three tournaments this weekend from Marion.  The tournament is set up with two pools of four teams. Cameron is in pool B with Blanco, Devine and La Vernia.  Pool A has Marion, Lago Vista, St. Anthony and Canyon Lake.  

Pool B will play all of their games on Friday. The Yoemen will take on Blanco at 11 a.m., Devine at 3 p.m. and La Vernia at 7 p.m.  

Each team will play one game on Saturday, with the number one seeds playing for the championship at 3 p.m.  

The team will return home next week to host the Cameron and Rogers tournament, which will see 17 teams travel to the area. We will have a full preview of that tournament plus results from Marion in next week’s edition of sports.  

Cameron JV Tournament

If you’re not planning on making the long trek down to Marion, you can come out and catch the JV from the Yards of Cameron this Friday and Saturday.  

Teams participating in the tournament: Cameron Yoe, A&M Consolidated, Gateway Prep, Robinson and Rogers. 

The tournament is a pure round round style, with Cameron playing Gateway Prep at 3 p.m. on Friday, Rogers at 7 p.m. on Friday and then closing with Robinson at 10 a.m. on Saturday.  Cameron’s JV will play Rogers at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
