Cameron goes 2-1 in Marion, set to host this weekend

Much of the baseball teams across the state either played one game or did not play any games at all due to the weather for their opening tournament. Cameron was one of the fortunate few to get 3 games in at the turf field of Marion over the weekend. The Yoemen finished with a 2-1 mark, with wins over #16 Blanco (6-5) and 4A Devine (4-1), and a loss to 4A La Vernia (4-0).

“Going into that tournament, I was not sure if we were going to play any games, but luckily the weather held up and were able to get some in,” said Yoe coach Hector Delgadillo.”

“I thought we played pretty good baseball. There are just a few things we are working on. Like I told the other coaches, we had three different lineups for each game and right now we are trying to figure out our identity and fill in some key positions. We are trying to give guys a chance and see what they can bring to the table.”

The Yoemen did not record stats over the weekend, but Delgadillo was pleased all around with his team. Included in that group was Mario Gutierrez, which has been called up to help on the mound. The sophomore picked up the win over Devine.

“We were bringing him to the varsity tournaments this year to see what he could do and that is kind of his role right now,” said the coach. “He stepped up and that is what we ask from our kids. With the new guys coming through, it’s now time for them to step and up show what they can do.”

Cameron/Rogers Tournament (revised)

The Cameron and Rogers tournament was set to host 17 teams from all across Central Texas this Thursday through Saturday. Cameron is still set to host all of their games with the turf, but Rogers’ natural surface has not held up so well with the recent rain.

“I had spoke with the Rogers coach and their field is currently under water,” said Delgadillo on Monday. “We have a contingency plan. Madisonville is in our tournament and they offered their field. Just looking at the teams we had, there are about 5-6 teams that geographically could go there and the rest will just play here in Cameron.”

That contingency plan is now in place as Madisonville will host games on Thursday and Saturday.

Cameron will still get their full share of games, hosting 7 games on Thursday, 7 on Friday and another 6 on Saturday. Madisonville will host games on Thursday and Saturday. On Friday, action will only take place in Cameron.

The original pools:

Pool A: Caldwell, Cameron Yoe, Taylor, Lufkin Hudson, Navasota

Pool B: Buffalo, Gatesville, Rogers, Silsbee

Pool C: Bridge City, Bellville, Giddings, Madisonville

Pool D: Burnet, Clifton, Gateway Prep, Midway JV

There will no longer be pool play with the revised bracket and this will be a pure round-robin style tournament. That means no championship game as originally planned.

Cameron will start their play on Thursday evening, with the Taylor Ducks on deck. The Yoemen will return Friday morning for battle with the Caldwell Hornets (8:00 am) before one final game on Saturday morning with Buffalo (9:00 am).  

It is simply all about getting games in despite the weather.

“A lot of coaches just want to get games in,” said Delgadillo. “We are trying to get us 3-4 games each. I know there was some that just got in one last weekend and some didn’t get any, so I think they’ll be pleased with three if not four. It’s hard to predict the weather. Rogers has a pretty nice field, but you can’t do much when it’s underwater.”
