Tom Dupree Kirkscey, 89, of Rosebud, passed away at his home on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2018.
Tom was born Aug. 23, 1928, in Lott, to Thomas Cicero and Bernice Barnett Kirkscey. He graduated from Lott High School in 1945 and received an athletic scholarship to play football at Southwestern University in Georgetown. He graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.
At Southwestern, he met the love of his life, Bena Taylor Kirkscey. They were married on July 25, 1948. After college, Tom coached several sports and taught business classes at Rochelle, Smithville, and Eagle Lake High Schools. In 1953, he and Bena moved to Rosebud to operate the Kirkscey Locker Plant until his retirement in 1993. He thoroughly enjoyed visiting with his customers.
Tom was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. He served as a Boy Scout leader and coached Little League Baseball. He served on the Rosebud City Council and the Board of the First National Bank in Rosebud. He was an avid golfer and closely followed Texas high school football. He loved to watch his children and grandchildren play sports and show animals.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Bena Taylor Kirkscey.
Tom is survived by three children, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Children include Tim Kirkscey and wife Janice of Temple, Mark Kirkscey and wife Kenna of East Bernard, and Russell Kirkscey and wife Laurie of Blanco. Grandchildren include Deana Smith and husband Jamie Smith of Zephyr, Matt Kirkscey and wife Sarah of Salado, Chris Kirkscey of Dallas, Amanda Kirkscey of Frankfurt, Germany, Eleanor Kirkscey of Dallas and Thomas Kirkscey of Lubbock. Great-Grandchildren include Hayden Schroeder, Chandler Kirkscey, Carson Kirkscey, and Brigham Kirkscey.
Pallbearers are his three grandsons, great-grandson Hayden Schroeder, Jerry Fikes and Carson Wallace.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at Cook-Gerngross-Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Rosebud. A celebration of Tom’s life will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 24, at the First United Methodist Church in Rosebud. Burial will be private.
