Mexia game details released
The Cameron Yoemen finally know where they will be playing in week one versus Mexia. It was announced last Thursday afternoon that Cameron and Mexia would be playing in Alvarado on Friday, August 31 at 7:30. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Mexia, but complications with the turf forced the move to a new location. There was an option to bring the game to Cameron, but that would have meant only four home games in 2019 instead of an even five. Cameron will be the visitors. Charles Head Stadium was opened in 1985, seats 4,100 people and does have artificial turf.
Lady Yoe win four in Leon
The Cameron Lady Yoe found success in day two and three of the Leon tournament last weekend, finishing with a record of 4-2 to finish in third place in the bronze bracket. Cameron struggled in day one, dropping matches to Huffman Hargrave (14-25, 16-25), Southwest Christian (23-25, 23-25) and Killeen Shoemaker (25-23, 23-25, 14-25). The ladies rebounded on day two, beating Brazos Christian School (25-4, 25-12), falling to Castleberry (24-26, 18-15) before defeating Palestine Westwood (24-26, 25-18, 25-11). In bronze bracket play, Cameron beat Normangee (25-16, 25-20), fell to Teague (23-25, 17-25) before ending the day with a win over Centerville (25-20, 25-11).
The ladies will be in Robinson this week for their final tournament of the year. Cameron will open with Robinson JV at 9:00 am, Robinson at 10:00 am and Abbott at 1:00 pm. Saturday bracket play will be decided once pool play has been completed.
Cameron fell on the road on Tuesday to Gatesville in a tigh five sets, 17-25, 25-18, 14-25, 25-11, 17-19.
Lorena scrimmage report
The Cameron Yoemen took on Lorena in their opening scrimmage this past Friday from Yoe Field. As with most first scrimmages, there were a mix of positives along with things that could be improved.
“It was a good first scrimmage,” said Yoe coach Tommy Brashear. “They are sound, physical
and well-coached, and that is what we needed. We have a lot of work to do, but the good thing about scrimmaging people that are sound is that you see what you need to work on.”
Overall, Lorena had the advantage on the night in scoring, four scores to two. Each first team had one touchdown apiece, while the Lorena second team put up three scores to the Yoemen’s one. Regardless, scoring is secondary at this point.
“I’m not sure what the scores are, but I know they had more,” Brashear said. “I go into scrimmages not really caring about the score. I run a lot of run plays over and over because we have to get good at them and running the football. There were some opportunities that we had in the passing game, but I’m not going to spend all my plays in a scrimmage doing that.”
One big positive on the night was the performance of the offensive line and running backs in the ground game, which managed to pick up big chunks of yardage on several players.
“We are getting better up there,” said Brashear. “I think Coach Zeinert is doing a great job with that o-line, getting them where we need them to be. I have seen steady improvement from day one to now, and that is what you want.”
A number of backs carried the ball, including senior Davion Bynaum and junior Nico Vargas. We may see plenty more of that once the season gets going.
“I kind of want to do that throughout the year,” Brashear said. “I think we have a thunder and lightning mix with those two guys and I like that. I think it’s great to have two that can go in there and take care of business.”
Quarterbacks wise, all three had positive moments, with Anthony Layne and Kirk Lara each recording touchdown passes.
“I thought the quarterbacks did well as a whole tonight,” said Brashear. “Layne did well with some of the balls he threw. I thought they read things pretty well.”
The Lorena freshmen outscored Cameron, 7-4, while the JV was also outscored by the Leopards, 2-1.
