Yoe impresses in Madisonville

The Yoemen hit the road to close out their scrimmage schedule last Thursday in Madisonville. One of the main talking points after week one was to be a week better in week two, and after Thursday it would be hard to say that was not accomplished, as the Yoemen looked impressive on both sides of the ball in what was a five touchdown to zero advantage.

“I think they are a little young this year, but regardless I was looking to see if we were fixing our mistakes, and I feel like we did that tonight,” said Yoe coach Tommy Brashear. “I thought we did some good things in the run game and in the pass game as well. We ran routes better and read things better. I know we still made mistakes because I saw them live, but we will go to work to fix those.”

In the controlled scripted set of plays portion of the scrimmage the Yoemen had a three scores to none advantage, with first string offense scoring twice and the second team once.

On the second play of the scrimmage, running back Davion Bynaum took the ball over the left side of the line, had a small crease and was gone for a 62-yard touchdown. Kirik Lara hit Ki’Zirrius Holt for an 8-yard touchdown pass while Anthony Layne connected with Kadrian Hammond on a 10-yard score.

In the live red zone possession series for each team, Anthony Layne intercepted a Mustang pass attempt while the Yoemen scored on just two plays, with another Bynaum 10-yard scamper up the middle.

Towards the end of the live quarter session the Yoemen once again scored on the ground, this time with Nico Vargas barreling up the middle for an 11-yard run.

“I envisioned seeing both of them in their rotating and those two prominitley carrying the ball,” said Brashear on his backs. “Bynaum is kind of a lightning quick guy, and if he sees an opening he’s gone. He’s a big play threat waiting to happen while Nico is more of that pound it guy. He can also break some runs, too.”

The defense gave up yards, but got the stops when necessary and did not allow the Mustangs to reach the endzone.

“The defense did bend but not break and we are keeping it real simple right now,” said Brashear. “The years we were really good on defense we kept it simple and bent and not broke. What I like most is the hustle and effort. As long as you have that, we can fix the little mistakes. I’m optimistic we are headed in the right direction their, too.”

Along with depth at running back, there appears to be plenty at quarterback as well, as Braden Brashear, Layne and Lara all looked good in their reps.

“I feel comfortable with all of our quarterbacks,” Brashear said. “Lara is reading his keys well and putting the ball where it needs to be. Layne is doing a great job and is a run threat. Braden is more of a technician and is more of a thinker and reads it and puts it there on time. I feel comfortable putting any of them in the game. It’s never a bad thing to have depth and I believe we have that this year where we may have not normally had it.”

Lady Yoe wins three in Robinson

Cameron closed out their tournament season last week on the road at Robinson, finishing with an even record of 3-3. Cameron had wins over Robinson JV (25-18, 25-21) and Abbott (25-19, 24-26, 25-18) and took a loss to the host (13-25, 23-25) on day one.

Returning to play on Saturday, Cameron had a tight loss to Lago Vista (25-16, 15-25, 24-26), fell to Fairfield (10-25, 19-25), and finished tournament play with a win over Midway JV (25-21, 25-18).

Sandwiched in-between tournament games, Cameron hosted Navasota on Friday and cruised to the three-set sweep, 25-22, 25-16, 25-15..

Carley Tucker led the way, coming in with 12 kills. Kenzee Layne had 3 kills, while Darci Denio and Kenzie Wimmer each had 2.

The freshmen (25-9, 25-9) and JV (25-22, 25-23) also picked up straight set wins.

The ladies were off on Tuesday but will host Monday on Friday from Yoe Gym. The varsity will go first at 4:30 with the JV to follow. The ladies will close out the non-district slate by hosting Marlin, starting at 5:00 pm on Tuesday.
