Showing off Cameron's new multi-event complex, CISD ball field

Economic Development Director Ginger Watkins and Cameron ISD Superintendent Allan Sapp speak to city and school officials at a media day and final walk-through event at the new CISD baseball field and Cameron multi-event center complex, a joint project between the city, the Cameron Economic Development Corporation and Cameron ISD.

City of Cameron and Cameron Independent School District officials joined CEDC directors for a final walk through and media day at the new C.H. Yoe High School Baseball Field and the EDC/city’s multiplex tourism event center Tuesday.
The project combines efforts of the three groups in the creation of a unique facility designed to capitalize on non-professional sports tourism.

County bans outdoor burning

Most Central Texas counties are under a burn ban, thanks to hot temperatures and the lack of rain.

On Monday, Cameron Fire Chief Henry Horelica, president of the Milam County Fire Chiefs Association, requested that the Milam County Commissioners Court approve a county-wide burn ban to take effect immediately.

El Niño will bring another wet winter, experts predict

A super-strong El Niño now brewing in the tropical Pacific will likely bring another rain-drenched winter to large parts of Texas, said Dr. John Nielsen- Gammon, state climatologist, College Station. But the climate scientist said he doesn’t expect a repeat of the 2015 wet spring will necessarily follow. The El Niño of 2014-2015 was only moderately strong, but the rain it brought, followed by a very wet spring, effectively ended the Texas drought. Meanwhile, the 2015-2016 El Niño is shaping up to be a record breaker, said Nielsen- Gammon, who is also a Regents Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at Texas A&M University.

Employment picture brightens

While the current jobless rate is higher than last month, Milam County’s overall employment picture is still brighter than last year, according to Texas Workforce Commission monthly figures. Milam County’s June employment rate of 5.3 percent is slightly higher than May’s 4.8 percent, but it is significantly better than last year when the unemployment rate was 6.8 percent. The TWC estimates the Milam County labor force at 10,199 workers with 9,662 currently employed and 537 looking for work.

County crop tour

Milam County AgrLife Extension hosted the annual crops tour this week, taking participants to see plots of corn, milo and cotton on farms in Buckholts, San Gabriel and Thorndale. At a cotton fi eld in Buckholts, Texas A&M cotton specialist Dr. Gaylon Morgan discussed yields and weather factors for this year’s crop. The event also featured a luncheon and an economic update and market outlook.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for a reception and curtain up at 7 p.m. Other performances are scheduled at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 26; 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2. Tickets for M*A*S*H may be purchased at the door for $15. Students with ID will be admitted for $12.

Countywide polling plan set for trial with Nov. 3 election

Milam County’s proposed countywide voting plan has gained state approval for a trial run with the November general election. Milam County Clerk Barbara Vansa received the notice of the approval from the Secretary of State’s Director of Elections Keith Ingram.
