Week 1 Scrimmage Outlooks

It’s that time of the year again. No, it’s not quite the start of the 2017 Texas high school football season, but it’s the next best thing in scrimmages. These are not official games, but it’s a very important time for coaches to gauge different positions and see where work is needed before the games really start to matter.

This week, I want to highlight some scrimmages around this area that I feel are noteworthy.

Top 13 Games Since 2010 - Finale

Today marks the final chapter in my top 13 Yoemen football games since 2010. Out of all of the variables measured to be included in this series, this game had a check mark up and down the list. Without further ado, the number game is the 2012 semifinal victory over Newton, 39-22.

Out of a very large amount of games played since that 2010 season, this one always comes back to be as the most special. Why? Well, there are a few reasons.

This was one of the best football games I have ever seen in person.

These are two programs that are known as powerhouses within their respective regions of the state.

Cameron and Newton both had state championship caliber football teams that season.

Lady Yoe Volleyball opens 2017 season

The first official regular season sporting event of the 2017-2018 school year got underway on Tuesday from Yoe Gym. The Lady Yoe volleyball team began their season by hosting the Lady Vikings of Lago Vista and the Thrall Tigerettes.

The competition was fierce, as Lago Vista was in the second round of the 3A playoffs last season while Thrall had advanced all the way to the 2A state tournament.

The ladies opened up things with a competitive match versus Lago Vista, falling in four sets: 15-25, 28-26, 25-16, 25-23.

For head coach Kamol Nohe, he is already seeing improvement from a season ago.

“I think this group is a different group of kids,” said the Lady Yoe head coach. “Last year, it was 0-3 and 0-3 early on, but coming in here we won the second set. That was a breakthrough. There are more breakthroughs coming along. The kids are really motivated and we just have to shape them to where they need to go.”

Top 13 Yoemen games since 2010 - Part IV

4. Daingerfield (2010)

In 1981, Cameron played in their first ever state championship against the Gilmer Buckeyes.  Things turned out well as the Yoemen took home the school’s first title, 26-3.  29 years later, Cameron was back in the state game - this time versus the Daingerfield Tigers - another East Texas power.  The Tigers were playing in their third consecutive championship game, and had won the previous two over Cisco (26-8) and Bushland (62-14).

It was a battle for the ages, but Daingerfield secured the three-peat on a deep touchdown pass in the final seconds, 33-27.

Cameron League Baseball Results

There were a total of four baseball teams from Cameron at state tournaments this past week. Everyone participating represented the community well, with each team winning at least two games at their final tournaments of the season.

Starting in the t-ball division, the Astros won their opening game before falling to eventual state champion and host Belton in the second round. The Astros got by another Belton team and Rusk before bowing out to Mineola to finish at 3-2.

Two Cameron teams participated in the eight and under coach pitch division. The Yankees won games over Mildred, Troup and Milford to earn a spot in the semifinals versus Belton. Cameron fell in that game, 4-2. The Yankees defeated Troup and then lost narrowly to the same Belton team (8-6) to finish second in the state.

7. Rockdale (2014)

Winning when it matters the most. The Yoemen exemplified what exactly that meant in their 2014 state championship run. Cameron started that season with a 2-4 record, which was capped off by a tight 34-27 loss to rival Rockdale in the annual Battle of the Bell game. From that point on, the Yoemen reeled off 10 straight wins en route to their third consecutive state championship.

This state quarterfinal game was chosen to take place at Georgetown High School. Cameron had played Lago Vista at this same venue in 2012 and had no problems, but these two Milam County rivals pushed the limits of the facility. In fact, hundreds missed the opening kickoff due to traffic and the concession stand was running out of food before the game even started. If this game were to happen again, it’s safe to say it would not be in Georgetown.

Now, on to the game.

Yoe non-district game listed as one of the best in the state

With the kickoff of the 2017 Texas High School football season just now weeks away, there is a lot of attention being shown towards the non-district schedules. These games are normally known as warm-ups for district play, but they also garner interest because of the matchups you won’t see in district or the playoffs.

This weekend, TexasHSFootball.com listed their top 13 3A games for 2017. All of Cameron’s non-district games should be challenging, but the game at China Spring on September 15 has a little more intrigue than the rest. As the online publication noted, “China Spring absolutely destroyed Yoe last season, 63-13”. However, it was also mentioned that Cameron should once again be in the title hunt and the Cougars could be a tad bit down from their state semifinal run.
