Workouts begin as fall sports season is just around the corner

Yoe quarterback Zack Andress goes through drills during the first week of two-a-day football practices.

Though it seems to be getting hotter by the week, that has not stopped the Yoe athletes from preparing for the start of a new sports season.

On Monday, over 150 Yoe athletes participated in the first day of summer workouts.

The Yoemen football team had 86 members out for the first day of practice. That number is expected to rise to around 90 once all physicals have been completed.

“The first day went really well,” said Yoemen head football coach and athletic director Tommy Brashear. “I was pleased with the kids attitudes. There was a lot of excitement for the the first day. I enjoyed their work ethic. If we keep working like that, then we ought to be pretty good.”

Yoemen impress at state 7-on-7

Yoemen State 7-on-7

The Cameron Yoemen compted in the state 7-on-7 tournament in July, finishing with a state quarterfinal appearance.

After finding large amounts of success throughout the months of May and June, the writing was on the wall for the Yoemen 7-on-7 team to make a good run at the state tournament this past week from Veterans Park in College Station.

The end result was a pool victory and a trip to the quarterfinals of the championship bracket – the best finish for the Yoemen since the 2010 championship game run.

Cameron completed pool play with a 2-1 record, but was the outright #1 seed due to a head-to-head victory over Springtown. Cameron defeated Giddings and McGregor in the first two rounds of championship bracket play before bowing out to the eventual champions in Kaufman in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
