Future Yoe cheerleaders honed their cheer and gymnastics skills at the Yoe Cheerleader Mini Camp on July 28 at the YHS gym. The camp included a performance at the end of the day for all Yoe fans.

Cameron ISD will provide breakfast and lunch free of charge to all students during the 2018-19 school year.

The district made the announcement on July 30 saying that students at Ben Milam Elementary, Cameron Elementary, Cameron Junior High and Yoe High School under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program for the 2018-19 school year will be provided lunch and breakfast for no charge.

Cameron ISD qualified to operate under the Community Eligibility Provision provide breakfast and lunch to all children at no charge and eliminate the collection of meal applications for free, reduced-price, and paid student meals. This new approach reduces burdens for both families and school administrators and helps ensure that students receive nutritious meals.

Milam County Judge David Barkemeyer, left, swears in Chris White as Milam County Sheriff on July 31. Barkemeyer called the day a sad and happy event due to the loss of Sheriff David Greene, saying the county will look to the future under the leadership of White, who formerly served as Chief Deputy in the county. White thanked everyone for their support and help during the past few weeks and said he will do his best to fill Greene’s shoes. White will serve as sheriff until the election in November.

Within essentially all competitions, there is a certain plateau or level a person or team would like to reach.  Within high school sports it’s the state championship, and with pro football it’s the Super Bowl.  

If you’re a fan of horses and endurance riding, then you have more than likely heard of the Tevis Cup - regarded as the most difficult 100-mile race in the United States. 

On July 28, two locals and their horses will be making the trek up to Robie Equestrian Park in California to take their crack at the trail.  That would be none other than Beth and Dale Keen.  

Many know Dale as the cross country and wrestling coach at Yoe High School.  

The longest-tenured coach at Cameron ISD grew his passion for endurance riding at a very young age in Colorado, where he grew up around the animals. 

“I grew up on a thoroughbred horse race farm in Colorado,” said Dale on this childhood.  “My entire life I had heard of the Tevis Cup.”

Milam County Commissioners enacted a burn ban on Monday effective immediately. 

The high temperatures and dry conditions prompted the Milam County Commissioners to reinstate the burn ban during court on Monday morning.

Cameron Fire Chief Henry Horelica said that it is very dry and not expected to get better. He said there have been several large grass fires in other counties and that 150 counties across Texas are already under burn bans.

Cameron residents shouldn’t be alarmed by the taste and odor of the city’s water.

The City of Cameron released a statement last week saying, “the Little River is currently generating an abundance of organic matter that has produced a distinctive taste and odor. Unfortunately our treatment process does not take away either taste or odor at the levels being produced.”

The city said the water meets all TCEQ standards and has been filtered and disinfected well beyond all requirements. Samples continue to be monitored from around town, at the ground storage tank and at the filter plant.

Customers who experience taste or odor can chill tap water before drinking in order to make the taste and smell issues less noticeable.  It is not necessary to boil water as the water is safe to drink and meets all state and federal public health standards. 

The city said this problem will clear up once there is more flow in the Little River.

Milam County Judge David Barkemeyer announced today that all county offices will be closed Monday, July 30, as a memorial to Sheriff David Greene.

This includes all commissioner's precincts. This will allow all county employees to attend the funeral.

Funeral services will be held on July 30 at 10 a.m. at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton.

"We all pay tribute to the passing of our recognized leader of law enforcement in the county, as well as our Brown Santa who each year lead the effort to raise thousands to fund the toy drive which brought Christmas to underpriviliged kids throughout the county," Barkemeyer said.

A caravan of law enforcement vehicles from throughout Central Texas will leave Cameron at 6:30 a.m. Monday to escort the Sheriff to the Expo Center for the funeral.

Milam County Sheriff David Greene has passed away.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Chris White said Friday night, “I am sad to report to you that our Sheriff has passed away this evening - please say a prayer for Janell and the family and for all of us too.”

Greene suffered a heart attack a few weeks ago while on vacation in Oregon.

White said Greene`s body will be picked up this evening, July 23, from an Austin airport and will be escorted back to Milam County, with an expected return of 9 or 9:30 p.m. He added that a large contingent of law enforcement will be escorting the body back along US 79 through Rockdale, before moving along US 77 to Cameron. White advised that drivers should be aware of this event and that the procession is likely to disrupt traffic. Williamson County motorcycle officers will be providing traffic controls.
