A man is in custody in connection with the shooting of a Calvert man in early September.

Cameron Police Department and Bell County Sheriff’s Office arrested Atorious Marquis Williams, also known as Lil Man, 21, from Temple in Bell County on Oct. 1. He was arrested on a felony arrest warrant for aggravated robbery.

According to the Cameron Police Department, on Sept. 21 Sr. Sgt. Kris Stringer investigated and obtained felony arrest warrants from Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Greg Hoelscher for Atorious Marquis Williams, also known as Lil Man, and James Roy Whitfield, also known as Snoopy, 24, of Temple, for aggravated robbery.

The warrants were issued in connection with a shooting that occurred on Sept. 13 in Cameron.

Participants in the Yoe Cheer Mini Camp from this past summer cheered on the Yoemen in the first quarter of the game against Giddings on Sept. 21.

The Cameron Police Department will host a community event for National Night Out at the station to promote police- community partnerships and make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.

The event will feature games and giveaways and food for all. Several organizations will be on hand for the event including Cameron Municipal Court, Cameron Volunteer Fire Department, Milam County Health Department, Standards, Winnie L. Nursing Home, AMR, Milam County Crime Stoppers, Cameron PD, Milam County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Parks and Wildlife and DPS.

The Cameron community is invited to read along with CISD students this fall as they begin reading “Charlotte’s Web.”

The Community Reading Event will kick off in October and target Pre-K through fifth graders. Every student in CISD will be reading the book at the same time.

“We invite all of Yoe Nation to read with us,” CISD Superintendent Allan Sapp said. “This is a great book and it is a perfect time for families to read at home.”

All students will receive a copy of the book to bring home. The community is invited to stop by at purchase a copy of the book at cost for $4.50 to read along with the students. Contact Tanya Hoelscher at CISD Administration at (254) 697-3512 to get a book.

The reading event will last four weeks from Oct. 1-26 and students will have activities centered around the book in class.

CISD invites the community to talk to students about the book when you see them and help to make them better readers.

The Cameron Chamber of Commerce honored Circle S BBQ as Business of the Month for September. Sam Berry purchased the business in 2000 from Charles Swindle and it was a 16 x 20 structure.  In 2003 Sam expanded to its present structure and has been serving BBQ and catering service ever since. Circle S BBQ not only has great BBQ but has a large menu selection for any event.  Their catering service is top notch and they seek to serve your needs. Sam Berry has been a Chamber member since 2002 and has supported and sponsored many events and in the community.

CISD kicks off its Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader campaign each year by inviting a class from Ben Milam Elementary to participate by reading a book at the board meeting.

Milam County Commissioners approved the budget and tax rate for 2018-19 during a meeting Sept. 10.

Commissioners approved the $19.8 million budget for the county by a vote of 4-1 with Precinct 2 Commissioner Donald Shuffield voting against it because of the tax rate going up. Shuffield also voted against the tax rate, which will move to 73 cents per $100 of valuation. The tax rate was approved by a vote of 4-1.

The budget will raise less revenue from property taxes than last year’s budget by an amount of $701,966, which is a six percent decrease from last year’s budget. The property tax revenue to be added from new property on the tax roll this year is $165,118.

County Judge David Barkemeyer said there was considerable debate among the court this time on whether to raise the tax rate at all or to leave it at 70 cents, and they were almost equally divided on the issue in a column earlier this month.

The Milam County Burn Ban has been lifted, Milam County Judge David Barkemeyer announced today.

Fire Chiefs request that you notify your local fire department before undertaking any significant outdoor burn of any kind and refrain from outdoor burning during periods of high winds.

The Milam County Tax Office will be closed for tax collections, Monday, Sept. 10, while new hardware is being installed. 

On that day the Vehicle Registration and Titles Department will be open normal hours - 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for registration and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for title transfers.
