Yoemen pick up critical win over Jarrell

Going into Tuesday’s 20-3A contest, the outlook was pretty simple for Cameron.  Win, and control your own destiny towards a playoff spot. Lose, and fall two games back and further out of the playoff picture.

It was not pretty early on, but the Yoemen simply got it done in the end in what was a 7-5 win over the Jarrell Cougars from The Yards of Cameron. The win brings Cameron to 3-4, while Jarrell falls to 3-4 as both teams are now tied for the fourth spot in the standings one game into the second round of district.

Through the first four innings of play, a total of 10 errors were up on the board, with each team saddled with five apiece.

Yoe ace Jason Llanas was doing all that he could in the early going, as through four and a half innings his team trailed 5-2 despite not giving up an earned run.

Both soccer teams bow out to Liberty Hill

It was known going into Friday’s bi-district matchup with Liberty Hill that it was going to be an uphill battle.  Both Cameron teams had finished fourth in 25-4A, and had to match up with the district champions from 26-4A.

Both the Panthers and Lady Panthers proved they were power players as the Lady Yoe fell in the first matchup 15-0, while the Yoemen also could not turn the fortunes in a 8-0 loss.

Lady Yoe coach Laura Dickson pointed out how poised and seasoned this Liberty Hill team appeared to be.

“I’m sure there were not girls out there that haven’t played before.  They were definitely a fine-tuned machine out there, and they went hard at us the whole game but we never gave up.  I watched film coming in with them playing Salado, and I realized that this was going to be tough.”

Bertie Shumate: 1985-86 was an outstanding year for Yoemen

What can I say about the 1985-86 school year in athletics?

To start off, it was possibly the greatest year ever. Football, basketball, volleyball, track, baseball, golf, tennis and cross country - every sport - not only won district or qualified for playoffs, but they all went deep in playoffs and placed well at the state level.

My story just covers football, but the coaching and student results were terrific overall. The Yoemen only played a nine-game season because of scheduling problems, but overall they finished 11-1-1, four games deep in the playoffs losing in the quarterfinals to a loaded Van Vleck team 7-0 in the only shutout of a Toby York coached team.

The Yoemen opened at home against familiar foe Taylor, the Ducks left Yoe Field with a 24-7 loss, which was the 13th in the last 14 years. They refused to schedule the Yoemen after that, only playing us for six years, when the UIL placed them in the same district between 2000 and 2010.

Lady Yoe can’t generate runs in pair of defeats

If you look at the box score from Friday’s road tilt with rival Rockdale, it would show that both teams ended the night with five hits.  But, on this night it was the Lady Tigers that made them count the most in a 8-2 win.

Rockdale went up early when three-hole hitter Karley Leopold hit a solo home run to left.  Rockdale added three more in the second after an error.

Kenzie Wimmer continued her hot streak of deep balls in the third by sending one over the center field wall, scoring herself and Alejandra Ibarra.

Rockdale would add on single runs in the third and fourth and then a two-spot in the sixth to create separation.

Friday’s 20-3A Results: Rockdale 8, Cameron Yoe 2; Academy 4, Lexington 2; Jarrell 10, Franklin 0.  Rogers over Hearne.

Lady Yoe, Yoemen soccer setting standards for the future

On Thursday, the community of Cameron is going to get to see a first when both the Lady Yoe and Yoemen soccer teams host Liberty Hill in the bi-district round of the class 4A playoffs.

The Lady Yoe matchup with the Panthers at 5:30, with the Yoemen up next at 7:30.

Regardless of the outcome against the number one seeds from 26-4A, no one can take away what both of these teams have accomplished this season, making the playoffs for the first time in program history.

As her team wrapped up a practice heading up to the big match, Lady Yoe soccer coach Laura Dickson reflected on how far the program has come since its infant years.

Sports Shorts - 3/29

It’s not every day that you can see four different former Yoe athletes compete on the same field at the collegiate level. That happened over the weekend when four former Yoe baseball players suited up on the baseball diamond. Jordan Young and Jaime Dominguez of Hardin-Simmons and Michael Evan and Kylen Harrell of Concordia University matched up over the weekend. Concordia won the series 2-1, but in the process Young pitched to Evan and Harrell faced Dominguez. Pictured from left, Jordan Young, Michael Evan, Jaime Dominguez and Kylen Harrell.

Yoemen clip Rockdale late, blanked by Academy

The first installment of the Cameron and Rockdale baseball game went down to the wire as the Yoemen got a clutch late hit by Rick Fuentes to escape with a 6-4 win.

With the bases and loaded and two outs in the top of the seventh, Fuentes drove the first pitch he saw past the third baseman and into right field, bringing in what was the game-winning runs.

“A saw a fastball and they told us to hunt the fastball,” Fuentes said.  “I finally got the chance and I was able to execute.”

“It is good to see some guys coming up with runners on base and coming through in the clutch,” added Yoe coach Hector Delgadillo. Rick came through when we needed him to.”

For the second game in a row, Cameron got an excellent outing from their starting pitcher, as Alex Alonso went the distance with the 107-pitch performance.

Big inning costs Lady Yoe in loss to Rogers

Kenzie Wimmer continued her effort with the long ball, but it was not enough as the Lady Yoe fell to Rogers on Tuesday night, 12-2.  Wimmer hit a solo homer in the bottom of the first inning to put Cameron up 1-0, but Rogers used a big 5-run 4th and a 6-run 7th to pull away from the Lady Yoe.

Cameron held the 1-0 lead until the third when clean-up batter Shelby Mitchell hit one over the center field fence to tie the game.

Rogers sent 10 to the plate in the 4th to create separation at 6-1.  Wimmer would homer once again in the bottom of the 4th, but Cameron could not produce any other type of offense in the loss.

Madison Brunson tossed 4.1 innings, giving up 8 hits, 4 runs and struck out 3 batters.  Alejandra Ibarra also pitched 2.2 innings and gave up 5 hits, 3 earned runs and walked 3.

With the loss, Cameron drops to 2-4 in 20-3A.  Rogers, the number 13 team in the state, improves to 5-1.

Yoe hires Altair Rice AD as next offensive coordinator

Cameron made a big splash hire on Monday when it was announced that current Altair Rice athletic director and head football coach Gary Zeinert was selected to be Cameron’s next offensive coordinator.  Zeinert has been a head coach for a total of 7 years, including the past 5 at Altair Rice.  Zeinert will be replacing outgoing offensive coordinator Abraham Vargas, which last month took a head job at Runge.  We will have full reaction from both Yoe athletic director Tommy Brashear and Zeinert in next week’s edition of sports.
