Lady Yoe Golf competes in Burnet

It was a tournament that featured primarily 5A and 6A schools, but the Lady Yoe golfers managed to hold their own by finishing in eighth out of 16 competing teams in Burnet.

Cameron shot at 365 on Monday from Delaware Springs, good enough for a tie with 6A Belton.  Senior Keagan Galvan once again paced her team, coming in with an 84. Jazmin Vaculin was just three strokes behind at 87, Carley Tucker came in with a 93, Emily Graham sat at 101 and Presley Berry rounded out the scoring at 112.

Complete team standings: Lake Travis (313), Round Rock (320), Vandegrift (321), Midway (323), Salado (344), Liberty Hill (351), Lampasas (364), Cameron Yoe (365), Belton (365), Salado B (371), Cedar Ridge (390), East View (394), Georgetown (411), Hays (413), Bastrop (431), Elgin (473), Cedar Creek (475), Taylor (503).

Yoe picks up first 20-3A win

Spring break was not kind to the Yoemen, which went 0-2, including a loss to Lexington on Thursday, 10-5.

Cameron’s offense had 11 hits but left the bases loaded on three occasions.  The defense was there with no errors, but Lexington pounded out 14 hits and scored in the first five innings to create a 10-3 lead which was too much to overcome.

Lexington’s top of the order did most of the damage in the contest, and they got the scoring going in the first as a Meuth double, Justice single and Hess single plated one run to give the Eagles the early 1-0 lead.

Collectively, the top four in the Lexington lineup totalled 10 of the 14 hits.

Down 4-0 in the 2nd, Bryce Brashear got the Yoemen on the scoreboard by lining a single to the pitcher Hess, scoring Anthony Layne from third base.

Yoe advances to semifinals in Franklin, falls hard to Lions in district

Entering their final tournament of the season, Cameron was in need of a little confidence boost before the long stretch of 20-3A games. The Yoemen had gone winless in their own tournament and had fallen to Jarrell in the district opener.

In 2017, Cameron, which was ranked inside the top 25 at the time, managed to go undefeated in the Franklin tournament before having the championship versus number one Lago Vista called off in the fourth inning due to weather.

The Yoemen fell just one-short of matching that finish in 2018, advancing to the semifinals of the 32-team bracket before falling to #13 Salado in dramatic fashion, 9-8.

Both soccer team makes playoffs for first time in program history

The playoffs are the goal for every team once they begin district play. The Yoe and Lady Yoe soccer teams are going to get to experience just what that feel like, as both teams have advanced to the postseason for the first time in program history.

Despite falling to Gateway Prep on the road Friday, 3-0, the Lady Yoe simply needed Jarrell to lose to Salado, and they did. The Lady Yoe finished 25-4A with a 3-7 record and will advance as the fourth place team. Playoff details have not been released yet, but the bi-district round is not until March 29-31.

The boys also did not have much drama in advancing to the postseason. Cameron was off the final game due to Gateway Prep not having a boys team. The Yoemen finished 2-6 in 25-4A and will also be advancing as the fourth seed out of the district. Playoff details are still to be determined.

Softball splits games with Lexington, Franklin

The Lady Yoe arguably had the roughest opening schedule of any team in 20-3A, having to begin play with defending state champ Academy in addition to games with playoff hopefuls Jarrell and Lexington.

Cameron fell to hard to both Academy (16-1) and Jarrell (11-1), but did get in the win column without having to play a game when Hearne had to forfeit due to not having enough players to field a squad.

Lexington

Things did not get better in games played on Monday night as Lexington outhit Cameron 19-2, which produced a lopsided 16-1 final score after 5 innings.

Kylie Hobbs was big for Lexington all night, finishing 3-5 from the plate with 1 double, 2 home runs, and 6 total runs driven in.

The first homer was a 3-run shot in the first before the Lady Eagles added one more to go up 4-0.

Yoe soccer drops pair; Lady yoe clinch playoff spot

Despite falling to both Academy on Friday and Salado on Tuesday, Yoe soccer still has an opportunity to advance into the postseason for the first time in school history.

After only falling 1-0 on their first meeting, the Yoemen could not keep pace the second go-around in a 5-0 loss to Academy.  The overall shots on goal saw Academy only hold a slight edge at 16-15, but Cameron simply could not convert any shot attempts.

At the 35-minute mark of the first half, Yoe goalie Chandler Barton saved an on-goal shot to keep the match scoreless, but an ensuing corner kick led to the first goal.

Cameron had one of their best opportunities to score just minutes later when Henry Martinez got behind defenders, but was just one step too slow as the Bees goaltender collected the ball and ended the threat.

At the 30-minute mark the same situation presented itself for Diego Martinez, but he also was not able to get off an attempt.

Yoe struggles in Cameron tourney

The Cameron tournament is generally regarded as one of the toughest week two tournaments around the state.  The host team found the competition level to be stout in 2018, going 0-2-1 over three days of play.

Gateway Prep (4-0) and Clifton (2-0-1) both went undefeated in the tournament.

Caldwell (L 6-4)

The Yoemen fell behind Caldwell in game one 4-0, and could not complete a comeback in a 6-4 loss.

Cameron will look back at defensive miscues in the defeat, as only two of the six runs were earned through the six innings.

The Hornets got one of their earned runs in the top of the first when Ethan Blinka drove a double to left fielder Kadrian Hammond.  Three more would be added in the top of the fourth.

Softball posts winning record in Gatesville, falls hard in district games

Gatesville (L 16-7)

The Lady Yoe had mixed results this past weekend in the Gatesville tournament, but finished with a winning record at 3-2.

Cameron opened the tourney with a tough, four-inning loss to host Gatesville, 16-7 in four innings.  The Lady Yoe scored two runs in the first and three more in the third, but Gatesville already had 10 runs through two innings and added on four more in the fifth.

Cameron did have four errors in the contest, but all runs were earned and were charged to Madison Brunson (10) and Alejandra Ibarra (6) through their two innings of work.

Offensively, Cameron did produce 12 hits, with four players coming in with two or more knocks. Leadoff batter Brittany Hatter was a perfect 3-3 with two runs scored.  Kenzie Wimmer was 2-3 with two runs and 2 RBI, Karla Martinez was 2-3 with one run and four RBI and Ashlee Balch was 2-2.

Florence (W 10-2)

Yoe athletics boosters seeking more parent support

The organization responsible for providing support for all Yoe athletic programs is looking for new parents to step up and volunteer their time.

On Monday, the Yoe Athletic Boosters met and discussed a variety topics, including events that they are responsible for handling and how to get more members involved with their weekly sporting events.

As of now, the membership in the booster club has been steady, but the help has steadily decreased.

“Our booster membership stays static,” said booster club president Greg Hoelscher. “People pay $20 a family, and that is great. I care more when you come when we need help. That has been dwindling.
