The annual Bedlam football game between the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Oklahoma Sooners will take place this Saturday in Norman.

For the second straight year, the rivalry will decide the Big 12 championship.  The Cowboys and Sooners are ranked inside of the top 10 in the college football rankings and the winner could have an outside shot at one of the four playoff spots. 

Playing a big role on each side will be two former Yoemen in Oklahoma receiver Dede Westbrook and Oklahoma State defensive end Tralund Webber.

Westbrook was a receiver for the Yoemen during the state championship run in 2010 while Webber helped Cameron win back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013.

Both players began their careers in Blinn, and were on the same roster for the Buccaneers in 2014.

In Texas, there is just something different about high school football.  Whenever you attend a game on Friday night, you can feel the energy and passion from the teams and fan bases, and that makes you realize just how important this game is to so many of these communities.  

On Super Bowl Sunday, Cameron will have the honor of representing the Lone Star State on a national stage. 

NFL Films will be in Cameron from Monday, Nov. 28, until Friday, Dec. 2, to capture footage for their special feature. The program will air the day of the Super Bowl on the NFL Network. 

Choosing Cameron

There are plenty of tradition-rich football programs throughout this state. So, what made Cameron stand out? 

With 3:32 left in the first quarter of Friday’s 3A regional semifinal game in Temple, it was Teague that broke through with the initial touchdown on a 36-yard pass from Antonio Heard to his brother Tyrese Heard.  

That would end up being the only time that points would go up on the visitors side of the scoreboard the entire night, as the Yoe defense dominated in a 23-6 win over the Lions. 

"Our coaches did a great job," said Yoemen head coach Tommy Brashear.  "We gave them some different looks and the game plan was to not let Heard beat us.  He still got some yards here and there, but overall I felt like we did a great job containing him tonight.  I can't say enough about our defensive game plan and our defensive effort."

Cameron (11-2) now advances to play Malakoff in the state quarterfinals while Teague finishes the season at 10-3.  The Yoemen are now 4-0 all-time versus Teague.  

The Yoemen went on to win in overtime, 78-77.  Perez finished with a game high 30 points.  LaRondre Booze (15 points) and Ty Moore (12 points) both finished in double figures.  

The freshmen (49-29) and JV (64-47) both picked up wins over the Hornets.  Cameron is scheduled to host Holland on November 29 from Yoe Gym.  

The Cameron Lady Yoe basketball team hosted the first tournament of the year at Yoe Gym last week.  The ladies posted a strong showing, picking up wins over Milano, Riesel and Bartlett, before falling to Thorndale in the finale to finish with a 3-1 mark. 

“The tournament was good for our team to get in the win column and gain some confidence,” said Lady Yoe head coach Corey Cunningham.  “This was important for us after beginning the season with two tough teams.  Through most of the tournament we played strong defense which helped create transition offense.  The final game of the tournament against Thorndale exposed some areas that we need to continue to work on.”

On day one, Cameron opened play with a big 65-30 win over Milano.  Terryn Adams led all scorers with 20 points.  NaQuiria Gibbons (19) and Qua Workman (11) were both in double figures. 

If you look back over the past two playoff runs for Cameron, there are a select few number of games that stood out.  Two of those games came against the Teague Lions.  

During the road to the three-peat in 2014, Cameron out-paced the Lions in a 42-31 win in the area round of the playoffs.  In 2015 it was the state quarterfinals where the Yoemen won in dramatic come from behind fashion, 28-21.  

What will happen in 2016?  We will find that out on Friday night at Temple Wildcat Stadium when the Yoemen and Lions battle it out for the third straight season.  

Like the past two years, Teague appears to be one of the top teams in region and the state. 

"Teague has played very well," said Yoemen head coach Tommy Brashear.  "They are a very good football team.  They are big and fast and they have everything that you would want as a coach.  It's going to be a very tough battle."

There are a total of three small schools across the state of Texas that have wrestling programs - Amarillo River Road and Boys Ranch out of West Texas, and now Cameron Yoe.

The thought of starting the program in Cameron came about a few years ago when cross country coach Dale Keen started teaching wrestling during PE. 

“About a year and a half ago or so, Rico and these guys wanted me to teach them how to wrestle,” said Keen.  “They heard that I was teaching it in PE, and it wasn't going very good there.  Finally, I said show up at six in the morning.  We started teaching them, and they were so enthused.”

2015 was the first time in school-history Cameron competed in wrestling.  This is nothing new to Keen, which started up the cross country program in Cameron 34 years ago.

Teague (10-2) Vs. Cameron Yoe (10-2)

When the Cameron Yoemen are firing on all cylinders, you are going to see solid play in pretty much every phase of the game.

On Friday night from Buddy Moorhead Stadium in Conroe, we got that type of performance.  Cameron used a balanced attack on offense to go along with a combination of big plays on special teams to push across six scores.  That, combined with a stingy, workmanlike effort on defense, has the Yoemen back in the regional semifinals following a 48-26 win over the Woodville Eagles.  

The Yoemen (10-2) jumped all over Woodville (10-2) early on in the contest, scoring 35 first half points while the defense held the ground-heavy Eagles to just two scores.
