Yoe band earns straight ones at Belton marching contest

The C.H. Yoe High School Marching Band participated in a marching contest on Tuesday from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton.

The Yoe band, which is coming off another trip to the state marching contest in 2015, achieved straight division one ratings from the judges.

“Based on what I saw down on the field, the kids had a really great run through,” said head band director Craig George.  “The marching looked good and the playing sounded nice, so we will have to see what the video shows from up top.  Overall, the kids just did an outstanding job today.”

The performance was a good measuring stick for where the band stands, but it’s also useful in getting the students acclimated with the contest season in addition to seeing what will need to be worked out over the next few weeks.

Westbrook named Big 12 offensive player of the week

By Mike Houck – Assistant A.D. / Strategic Communications – www.soonersports.com

NORMAN — University of Oklahoma wide receiver Dede Westbrook has been named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after his record-breaking performance in OU's 45-40 win over Texas on Saturday in Dallas, the conference announced Monday.

Playing in his final Red River Showdown game, Westbrook caught a career-high 10 passes (the most ever by an OU player in the series) for a school-record 232 yards and a career-high three touchdowns as the Sooners finished with 672 yards of total offense, five shy of the program record against the Longhorns.

Westbrook's scores came from 71, 42 and 47 yards out, and all 10 of his catches were made by the 5:39 mark of the third quarter.

Week 8 Football Outlook

Cameron Yoe (6-1/3-0) Vs. Rockdale (5-1/2-0)

The Battle of the Bell game will once again take center stage as the biggest contest in 3A division one for week eight.  Cameron is coming off a 46-0 shutout win over Jarrell.  It wasn't exactly the performance you would expect in the playoffs, but Cameron did exactly what they needed to in order to remain undefeated in district play.  The Tigers did score 49 last week, but gave up 35 and had to pull away late from Troy.  To me, this game will come down to who has the better defensive performance.  Rockdale has a good amount of speed, particularly from QB David Franklin, RB Davion Ford and WR JaQuayln Crawford.  Cameron’s offensive is very difficult to stop, but at the end of the day I believe this team will go as far as the defense will take them.

Josh's Pick: Cameron Yoe by 14.

Cameron hosts cross country meet

On Monday, hundreds of runners from across Central Texas competed in the Cameron Invitational from the Junior High campus.  This was the final tuneup for many teams before district gets underway next week.

The Yoemen had four runners compete at the varsity level.  Jose Osorio continued his string of strong performances, coming in  8th place finish with a time of 17:47.  Rico Bolivar (57th, 21:46), Joe Uvalle (61st, 22:22) and Eric Rojas (66th, 22:44) all ran for Cameron.

“Jose is a bright spot,” said Yoe cross country head coach Dale Keen.  “Rico usually runs better, but his asthma is bothering him a lot today.  All we can do at district is line them up and run and see what happens.  Jose should have a really good chance to get to regionals.”

Parker Jones of Milano finished second overall at 16:41.

Yoemen post shutout in blowout win over Jarrell

If there was a trap game on the schedule for Cameron, it was going to come this week in Jarrell.  The Yoemen had just come off a huge win on the road and it would have been easy to look forward to next week’s huge Battle of the Bell contest with Rockdale.

Those concerns were quickly erased as the Yoemen built a 26-0 half-time lead before coasting in the second half to win, 46-0.  The shutout was the first since 2013 when the Yoemen shutout Florence, 77-0.  With the win, the Yoemen to improve to 3-0 while Jarrell remains winless at 0-3.

Cameron got their ground game going in a big way in this 10-3A contest, rolling in 189 yards on 25 carries.  Tydrick Williams had 10 of those carries for 86 yards and three touchdowns.

Osorio finishes second, girls JV captures championship at Florence cross country meet

As district quickly approaches, the Yoemen cross country teams continue to show improvement.  Jose Osorio continues to shine for the Yoemen, finishing in second place (19:06.18) in a field of 45 runners.  Additionally, the JV girls teams captured the championship with three runners finishing in the top five.

“Jose Osorio ran a good 2nd,” said Yoemen head coach Dale Keen.  “The girls picked it up good and won JV division.  Frances Sims was 2nd.”

Osorio was just seconds behind the overall winner of the event, Andrew Holt (18:44.20) of Lago Vista.

Sims finished in second overall with a time of 15:42.06.  Patience Adcock was right behind her in third at 17:09.15.  Rosa Valles (5th, 17:54.58), Harlie Halpain (9th, 18:47.57), McKenzie Salicas (13th, 23:02.26) and Ana Bowman (14th, 24:32.72) also ran for the girls JV.

Lady Yoe host dig pink game

District play continued for the Lady Yoe last week.  Cameron was on the road at Franklin on Friday to wrap up the first half of 20-3A action before returning home on Tuesday to host Rogers in the big Dink Pink game.

Last year, C.H. Yoe High School was recognized by Side-Out as one of top fundraising schools for breast cancer research.  According to the organization, thousands of volleyball players, coaches, and families in all 50 states join together to participate in the program.

Cameron had raised $34,000 from 2010 up to 2014.  The events have gotten bigger every year, and in 2015 the Lady Yoe raised $14,555 for cancer research, good enough for fifth in the country.

Yoemen not looking past Jarrell

Last week, everyone’s attention was fully on the Cameron vs. Franklin district showdown.  Many statewide publications featured it as one of the the top games in the state, and it lived up to the billing as the Yoemen pulled out a dramatic 42-38 win to improve to 2-0 in 20-3A play.

This week will be somewhat of a different storyline.  Jarrell has only won one ball game so far this year and has struggled out of the gate in 10-3A, failing to win a game in two attempts.

“Hopefully our kids come out and take a step forward and not a step back,” said Yoemen head coach Tommy Brashear.  “We don’t feel you stay the same.  You are either getting better or getting worse.  We want to come out this week and work hard like we have the past two weeks and continue to get better.”

Week 7 Football Outlook

Jarrell (1-5/0-2) Vs. Cameron Yoe (5-1/2-0)

The Yoemen are coming off of an emotional 42-38 victory over a top five Franklin team in week six.  Jarrell is on the opposite end of the spectrum, winning just one game this season.  Sometimes you expect a let down in games of this nature, but Cameron does not want to go into the big Battle of the Bell game with a sluggish performance.  There is potential to have an ample amount of success on each side of the ball.  The biggest key at this point is to work on improving the all-around game and staying healthy.
