EBCO General Contractors was selected as the Cameron Chamber’s first Business of the Month in launching the new program to promote Cameron businesses. EBCO is one of the top general contractor firms in Texas. This past year EBCO renovated an existing structure in Cameron to locate its updated headquarters on 804 E 1st St. John Egger started this business in Cameron in 1984 and has had opportunities to move his headquarters to larger cities, but has kept his roots here in Cameron. The Chamber is proud to announce EBCO General Contractors as April Business of the Month.

A new event will honor area veterans.

The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary will sponsor the first Veterans Appreciation Day Luncheon on April 22 from 1-5 p.m. at the American Legion Huts at Wilson Ledbetter Park. 

Organizer Joleen Cahill said the event is meant to honor our veterans and their families. Festivities are for veterans and their families, active duty military, and gold star families. 

There will be a ham meal provided free of charge beginning at 1 p.m. A short program will begin at 2 p.m. with speaker Troy Kelly.

Kelly is a retired Army veteran of the Vietnam War and Tet Offensive. He is a sculptor. He created the Fifth of November Memorial at Fort Hood and the Vietnam Memorial at Killeen Central Veterans Center.

A former Milam County Jail inmate filed a federal lawsuit against several Milam County officials and jail employees on April 2.

The lawsuit filed by John L. Robertson, a Milam County resident, sues Sheriff David Greene, District Attorney William Torrey, Chief Deputy Chris White, former captain and jail supervisor Katrina Douglas, Jailer Jonathan Mendoza, Jailer Cindy McBee, Jailer Joshua Hughes, Jail Nurse Stephanie Vargas, Dr. Stuart J. Yoffe and Capt. Ryan Blankenmeyer.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, Waco Division.

The lawsuit seeks actual and punitive damages against all of the defendants, though no amount is specified. 

The Annual Cameron Funfest and BBQ Shootout will return to Ledbetter Park on May 4-6.

The Cameron City Council approved the use of the park for event organizers Working for Cameron during its meeting on April 2.

Julie Sulak with Working for Cameron said the event will once again feature the BBQ Shootout and popular events like Kid Fish, and the 5K Brat Trot Fun Run. She said this year they are partnering with the Cameron Chamber of Commerce for the arts and crafts part of the event and that 75 cookers have already registered for the cook-off.

The council also approved a request for Cameron Police Chief Lonnie Gosch to designate the Cameron Police Department as a “Safe Exchange Zone.”

The City of Cameron is repairing a storm drain on West Main Street at the South Burleson intersection. 

Per City Manager Rhett Parker at this time the street is closed, please avoid this area.

Street Superintendant Craig Arnold estimates that storm drain and street will be back in operation by Friday afternoon, April 6. 

The family of Steele and Marion Cooley recently purchased and installed a generator at the Cameron Fire Station. This generator will supply the entire building in case the power goes out. This is the first time the first station will have back up power since the first station was built in 1981. The Cooley family donated a little over $12,000 for this project. The generator is powered by propane. Fire Chief Henry Horelica said the CVFD is very grateful for the Cooley’s donation.

While the books are still closing on the 2018 Milam County Livestock Show, organizers are happy with another successful event.

One hundred and nine 4-H and FFA exhibitors qualified for this year’s premium sale concluding the show Saturday night. Sale proceeds have already topped $206,000 while tallying continues through this week with added money and donations still being accepted.  

Thorndale 4-Her Trayle Schroeder won Grand Champion in the steer show with his medium weight steer, while Cameron 4-Her Shawn Leifeste took Reserve Champion honors with his medium weight steer. 

Cameron 4-Her Kenan Mingus won Grand Champion honors in the swine show with her heavy weight swine. Thorndale 4-Her Hadley Meadors won Reserve Grand with her medium weight swine.

The American Legion Auxiliary Post #9 is hoping to begin a new tradition of honoring veterans in Milam County.

The Cameron City Council approved a request from the Auxiliary for the use of Ledbetter Park on April 22 for a Veterans Appreciation Day at the Legion Hut during its meeting March 19.

Ladies Auxiliary member Joleen Cahill said the event is open to all veterans and active duty military in the county. It will be from 1-5 p.m. at the Legion Hut with games, food and fun for everyone.

The council also heard departmental reports during the meeting.

Water and sewer director Gerald Brunson told council his department is busy with fixing pipes. He said all the pipe is under ground on Country Club for the first phase of the replacement project and plans are to kill the old line by Friday for the section of Country Club that runs to Reenie Drive and over to Wallace. He said it should be an easy change over.

The district calendar for the 2018-19 school year is now set.

The Cameron Independent School District Board of Trustees approved the calendar during its meeting on March 19.

The first day of school will be Aug. 15 and the year will end on May 23. Holidays for the 2018-19 year will be: Labor Day - Sept. 3, Thanksgiving - Nov. 19-23, Christmas - Dec. 20-31, Jan. 1-2, MLK Day - Jan. 21, Spring Break - March 11-15, Good Friday - April 19, and Yoe Day - May 9. Early release days for students are Oct. 1, Dec. 19 and May 23. Parent conferences will be held on Oct. 1.

CISD Superintendent Allan Sapp told the board that enrollment is sitting at 1,816 students right now. He said that is a few less students than normal, but not a big change.

Milam Community Theater’s production of  “12 Incompetent Jurors,” a comedy by Ian McWethy, continues this weekend at the Williams Events Center.

Performances will be Saturday, March 24, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, March 25,  at 2 p.m.. The final performance will be Saturday, March 31, at 7 p.m. at the Kay Theater in Rockdale.
