Cameron ISD begins search for new principal

Cameron ISD is on the search for a new high school principal after current Yoe High Principal Kenneth Driska accepted a new position last week.

Cameron ISD Superintendent Allan Sapp said Driska accepted a district level post as Transportation and Career and Technology Director last week. Driska replaces current Transportation Director Donald Sheppard, who is retiring. 

Assistant Superintendent Susan Pommerening has been named interim principal while the district begins the search for a permanent replacement. 

Sapp said Pommerening will be allowed final say on all campus decisions.

“All campus level decisions will be given final approval by Susan,” Sapp said. “We continue to encourage all parents to be involved in their child’s education as we strive for academic excellence for all students.”

Celebrating veterans

Cameron Elementary third grade students honored local veterans with a program on Nov. 11 in celebration of Veterans Day. The students sang several patriotic songs and spoke about patriotism. The program ended with a video honoring area veterans for their service. Several local veterans were in attendance.

Cameron PD looking for tips in Bush's robbery

The Cameron Police Department is looking for tips in the robbery of a local restaurant last week.

Police were called to the Bush’s Chicken in the 800 block of West 4th in reference to an armed robbery on Nov. 10 at 10:27 p.m.

According to the Cameron PD, three employees were in the restaurant at the time.

The suspect is described as a black male in his early 20s with a thin build and tattoos on his hands. He was wearing a mask during the robbery.

Investigators were told a black man entered the store just after closing, displayed a gun to the three employees, and demanded cash. The suspect fled the scene with an undisclosed amount, but police say no one was hurt during the robbery. 

Anyone with information should call Cameron Police at (254) 697-6574 or the Milam County Crimestoppers at (888) 697-8477. A $1,000 reward will be paid for information leading to the arrest of this suspect.

MCSO to kick off annual Brown Santa

The Milam County Sheriff’s Office will host its Seventh Annual Brown Santa Program this holiday season. The program kicked off Nov. 7.

The Milam County Sheriff’s Office is taking applications for those Milam County residents that would like to participate in the Brown Santa program. Please bring a Medicaid card or a WIC card with your child’s name on it, a current utility bill, a birth certificate or children that are in school must present a current report card. A parent or guardian must have a valid Texas ID.

Applications can be picked up at the Milam Count y Sheriff’s Office beginning Nov. 7.  

Anyone interested in donating new, unwrapped toys can bring them to the Sheriff’s Office at 512 N. Jefferson in Cameron and ask for Wynema Adams or Captain Douglas. The Sheriff’s Office will be the only drop off location.

Police Station, Municipal Court officially open

The Cameron Police Department and Municipal Court building officially opened with a ribbon cutting and open house on Nov. 7. The community was invited to tour the new building after a short presentation from Cameron Police Chief Randy Dixon and a ribbon cutting. The department and court moved into the new building earlier this year.

The Cameron Police Department and Municipal Court officially opened to the community on Nov. 7 with a ribbon cutting and grand opening.

“We are extremely proud of what we have here,” Cameron Police Chief Randy Dixon said. “We are tickled to be in this building. This structure will last many, many years for this organization and city.”

Dixon commended his officers and everyone that works in the department for their hard work in making the building a reality.

“The building that we were in was built in the 1900s,” he said. “It was built as a fire station and after the fire department built a new structure the city turned it into City Hall and it became the maintenance department and police department.”

Trump elected 45th President

Donald J. Trump was elected America’s 45th President on Tuesday night, defeating Hillary Clinton.

Milam County voters followed suit with Texas as a whole, overwhelmingly voting for Trump and Vice Presidential candidate Mike Pence.

Unofficial results from the Milam County Clerk’s Office saw 6,340 votes for Trump overall with 4,371 of those coming in early voting. Clinton and running mate Tim Kaine got 2,042 votes overall, 1,309 in early voting. Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson garnered 176 votes and Green Party candidate Jill Stein took 49 voted in the county.

Across Texas Trump received 52 percent of the vote to Clinton’s 43 percent.

In other races Bill Flores was easily reelected as U.S. Representative from District 17 receiving over 60 percent of the vote. Flores got 6,327 votes in Milam County. Democratic challenger William Matta received 1,919 votes and Libertarian Clark Patterson received 253 votes.

2016 election to be decided Nov. 8

The 2016 election will be decided on Nov. 8.

Already 4,494 Milam County residents have cast their ballot in early voting.

Milam County residents can vote from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 8 at the following locations: Milam County Courthouse, 102 South Fannin in Cameron; Buckholts Community Center, 110 W. Main in Buckholts; Rockdale Regional Juvenile Justice Center, 696 N. FM 487 in Rockdale; Cameron Community Center, 704 West 6th in Cameron; Gause Volunteer Fire Department, 102 Main Street in Gause; Milano Volunteer Fire Department, 305 East Main (Highway 79) in Milano; Rockdale George Hill Patterson Center, 609 Mill Street in Rockdale; and Thorndale VFW, 302 Moerbe Street in Thorndale.

Grand opening set for police station, municipal court building

The City of Cameron will officially open its new Police Department and Municipal Court Building with a ribbon cutting and grand opening on Nov. 7 at 10 a.m.

The Cameron Police Department located at 605 West 4th in Cameron.  

The public is invited to join with the city in celebrating this milestone in the history of Cameron. 

The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and will include the ribbon cutting and a short program to include the history of how this building came to fruition, awards to officers who put sweat equity into the building, self guided tours and refreshments.  

The new structure, including the Police Department and the Municipal Court Services, was constructed by the City of Cameron and staff, producing a modern, state of the art facility. 

The police and municipal court moved into the building earlier this year.

Early voting numbers strong in Milam County

Early voting for the Nov. 8 election began Monday, Oct. 24, and has been brisk in Milam County.

Over the first four days of voting 2,774 people placed their vote.

Milam County residents have four options for early voting: Milam County Clerk’s office, 107 W. Main in Cameron; Buckholts Community Center, 110 W. Main Street in Buckholts; Rockdale Regional Juvenile Justice Center, 696 North FM 487 in Rockdale; and Thorndale VFW, 304 East Moerbe in Thorndale.

The Milam County Clerk’s Office will be open Oct. 24-28 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Oct. 29 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Oct. 31 through Nov. 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Buckholts Community Center will be open Oct. 24-28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Oct. 31 through Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Rockdale Regional Juvenile Justice Center will be open Oct. 24-28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Oct. 31 through Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
