Council OKs new stop signs at Ben Milam

By Lindsey Vaculin

General Manager

The Cameron City Council discussed what to do with the old police station, approved new stop signs at Ben Milam and took the first steps toward allowing a remodel to the Cameron Pizza Hut at its meeting Sept. 6.

City Manager J. Rhett Parker suggested to council the police station building be used for city storage as he doesn’t see the city needing it for office space in the future.

Council also approved putting two stop signs at 21st Street and Cleveland Avenue to help alleviate traffic issues coming in and out of Ben Milam Elementary School.

Council also heard the first reading for an ordinance to create a reinvestment zone and offer a tax abatement for Brazos Pizza, Inc.

Police received a 911 call and got behind the vehicle and tried to stop it for at least 20 minutes.

The vehicle headed toward Temple where the DPS troopers joined the chase.

Dixon said the driver called 911 and told officers he wasn’t going to stop. The driver alluded officers and crashed into a Cameron police vehicle.

“We understand that he shot into a vehicle and shots were exchanged,” Dixon said.

Dixon said Texas Rangers are still investigating the incident and that names have not been released at this time.

CISD enrollment up; year off to good start

By Lindsey Vaculin

General Manager

The 2016-17 school year is off to a great start in Cameron Independent School District and exciting things are happening.

CISD Superintendent Allan Sapp said enrollment is on the rise. The district started the year with 1,833 students, which is 50 more students than the end of the 2015-16 school year.

That number included 20 students in CISD’s new 3-year-old Pre-K program.

The new half-day program gives additional academic and social interaction to a group of students who may not get that at home, Sapp said. There are currently 125 students in the 4-year-old Pre-K program at Cameron ISD.

Sapp said enrollment has picked up over the last few years, with a growth rate around three percent per year.

Eight new staff members have been added across the district to help with that growth.
