If you’re looking for consistency within a program, look no further than Lady Yoe Golf. Entering this season, Cameron had made it to state six straight years dating back to 2011. With all the top four golfers returning from 2016’s team, the pressure was on to make it seven in a row.

The ladies left no doubt, finishing in second place with a 746 - 66 strokes better than the third place team. Rockdale (1st, 736), along with Keene Smith (3rd, 812), will join Cameron as the three advancing teams from region III.

The Lady Yoe were in prime position after day one of play, shooting a 363 while sitting only five strokes behind Rockdale for first. Additionally, Cameron already had a 40-stroke lead over Keene Smith.

Alexis Magre led Cameron with an 85 while Keagan Galvan was only three strokes behind at 88. Jazmin Vaculin and Julia Harwell both shot a 95 for Cameron’s day one total. Emily Graham also played a round of golf, shooting a 119.

Cameron and Troy are two towns that are very familiar with each other. Both have been in the same football district since Cameron dropped down a classification, and the past two years, they were also in the same baseball district.

The Trojans moved down to 19-3A for 2017, so there was always that chance for a meeting in the playoffs. That is exactly what is happening as the Yoemen’s (19-6-1/10-2) second place finish in 20-3A and Troy’s (21-6/8-4) third place mark in 19-3A have the two matched in the first round of the postseason.

The series will be a best two out of three, with the first two games taking place in Cameron. The Yoemen will host Troy at The Yards of Cameron on Friday for a pair of games starting at 5:00 p.m. If a game three is needed, the series will shift to Troy on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.

Senior Caden Harris and his fellow classmates in the class of 2017 are set to graduate from Yoe High School on Friday, May 26. For most, that will be the final time they are representing the school.

For Harris and his teammates, the hopes are that there is another event to follow - a baseball game.

The Yoemen will enter the 256-team field in the UIL playoffs tomorrow when Troy comes to town for the start of the bi-district series. The goal is to survive that field for five weeks, which would clinch a spot in the final four at the state tournament in Round Rock.

Harris has been playing baseball in Cameron his entire life. From the t-ball days at Airport Park, select action with the Buzz Lightning, or time at The Yards of Cameron, baseball has always been there for the Yoe third baseman.

The Texas state track and field meet will be held from May 11 to May 13 in Austin.  If you are planning on attending, you will have a chance to watch a Yoe High athlete compete for a state championship. 

Brittney Moorer added to her impressive streak of performances by winning the shot put in this past week's 3A region III meet from Baylor University.  Moorer, which has already captured a district championship and area championship, continues to pile up the awards. 

Moorer was pleased with her performance, but feels she is capable of more when she throws in Austin later this month. 

Baseball Camp

The Yoemen baseball camp will take place on May 30 and May 31 and will be open to all incoming third through ninth graders.  The camp will take place at The Yards of Cameron from 9am to 12pm each day and the cost is $40 per camper.  If you register before May 23, you will receive a 2017 camp t-shirt.  You may register at The Yards on the first day of camp.  Each player needs to bring a glove, cleats and a bat.  All other equipment will be provided.  Please makes checks payable to John Broussard.  

Softball Camp

Entering the final week of play, Cameron’s position in 20-3A was locked in at the number two spot. Regardless of what happened in the final two games, that was not going to change. The only thing left to do was to take care of business and enter the playoffs on a high note, and the Yoemen did just that this past week with a pair of wins to close out the district schedule.

Cameron finished the regular season with a 19-5 overall mark and 10-2 record in 20-3A action.

Rockdale (W 7-5)

It took one extra innings, but the Yoemen did what was needed in a 7-5 win over rival Rockdale in 8 innings of play.

Uncharacteristic errors led to Rockdale taking a 5-1 lead after three before the Yoemen scored 1 in the fifth, 3 in the seventh and 2 more in the eighth inning to come from behind.

This past week, Cameron hosted the area track meet, which included schools from 19-3A and 20-3A. Just like with team sports, the goal of every track athlete is to survive one round and advance on to the next one. When it was all said and done, the Yoemen had four events move on while the Lady Yoe had five clinch a berth at regionals in Waco this Friday and Saturday.

Cameron has two first placed finishers, both coming on the girls side. The 4x100 relay team of Ashantia Brooks, Ashlee Balch, Destiny Anderson and Za’kara Bryson (50.460) took gold over McGregor (50.510). Brittney Moorer (37-10.75) also took first place in the shot put over Kinniknic Bundage (36-8) of Hearne. Za’kara Bryson in the 100 meter dash (2nd, 12.573), Makennah Shuffield (3rd, 4-8) in the high jump and the 4x200 relay team all advanced.

As many of you may already know, on the side I am the 3A and 4A coordinator for TxHighSchoolBaseball.com. In my time with the publication, I have worked with approximately 1,000 coaches and have traveled the state watching ball games. The 2017 baseball regular season will come to an end this week as the bi-district round of the playoffs are scheduled to get underway in just seven days. Some teams will decide on a home and home series if they are lucky enough to have a facility worthy enough to host, but most will decide to play at a neutral location.

Today I want to list the top venues I have been to personally and explain why I feel these are the top spots in this part of Texas. Before I get into the list, I do want to explain that I believe an ideal facility is made up of three simple ingredients, with the first two carrying the most weight.

Yoe golf advances to state tournament

It’s not about how you start, but how you finish. It was not as if the Yoemen played poorly in their first round of regional play from Brenham on Monday. The Yoemen shot a 366 collectively after one round of play, and sat in fifth place overall, behind Rockdale (337), Frankston (358), Buffalo (361), and Pollok Central (364). The top three teams advance on to the state tournament in May, and the Yoemen were only five shots back heading into day two.

On day two, Cameron not only played well enough to reach that plateau, but they managed to jump all the way up to the number two spot, shooting a 351 - a 15 stroke improvement. The 351 was five strokes better than Rockdale’s second round 356. The Tigers shot a 337 in their first round. The is the first time in school history that the boys golf team has advanced to the state tournament.

Even though the Cameron Lady Yoe were not going to be in the postseason, there were still games to be played to close out 2017. Cameron had fallen to Rogers in a tough 12-0 run-rule game the previous week, and had just one game remaining at rival Rockdale. The ladies ended the season as every other team hopes to - with a win.

Rogers (L 12-0)

The Lady Eagles of Rogers showed why they were in a position to claim the district championship, run-ruling the Lady Yoe in 5 innings, 12-0. Rogers banged out 15 hits compared to the Lady Yoe’s 3, and scored multiple runs in four of the five innings played.

Leadoff hitter Totty Arzole reached on a two-base error by right field to lead off the game. 7 batters later, Rogers had taken control with four runs across the plate.

Rogers added on 2 in the second, 3 in the fourth and 3 more in the fifth to finish off the game.
