TxDOT closure expected on FM 908

Beginning Monday, Feb. 5, weather permitting; the Texas Department of Transportation’s contractor will close FM 908 at the intersection of Roberts Avenue.

This closure will allow the contractor to replace a culvert on FM 908. A signed detour will be in place to guide the traveling public to use US 79 and US 77.  The duration of this closure will be five days.

TxDOT would like to remind everyone to obey all warning signs, watch for workers and equipment, buckle up and drive safely.

This is part of a $1.4 million dollar project to reconstruct the existing roadway and upgrade structures on FM 908 from US 79 to US 77.  This project is contracted to Cornerstone Paving and Construction, L.L.C. out of Brenham, Texas and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2018.  TxDOT and their contractor would like to thank everyone for their patience.

Thorndale ISD sets community meetings

Thorndale Independent School District’s community facilities team will hold two community meetings on Jan. 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the TISD Board Room and Jan. 31 at 6:30 p.m. in the Thorndale Vocational Ag Building.

The team has been meeting regularly to consider community feedback to the recent bond election along with assessing the needs for the future.

“They have worked hard to incorporate that feedback into a potential plan to address the district’s facility needs,” TISD Superintendent Adam Ivy said. “They began with safety and security in mind and then used feedback from multiple sources to fine tune the plan. The team along with your school board would like to give our community a chance to see the pieces of this plan before making a decision on how to proceed with a potential building project.”

Ivy said the team will share the details and give the community a chance to ask questions and give feedback during the meetings.

Over the last several weeks the Thorndale Police Department and local community members have been putting together plastic laundry baskets filled with items such as blankets, non-slip socks, nonperishable food, paper towels, flashlights, crossword puzzles, etc. for our senior citizens and shut-ins. On Thursday, Dec. 21, Thorndale Police officers and local leaders delivered baskets to seniors and shut-ins in the local area. This is our annual program for community outreach and it has received an overwhelming support from the community. They are proud and honored to be able to reach out to our community during this Christmas season.

Bulldogs top Junction, set for Refugio

The Thorndale Bulldogs (5-6) had a bad taste in their mouths after losing to Junction (3-8) in the first round of the postseason in 2016.  The teams’ 2017 battle had a different outcome and the only thing on the Bulldogs’ mouth this time were smiles as Thorndale defeated Junction 48-7 on Friday night in Marble Falls.

Bulldogs head coach Scott Hawkins was please with the team’s performance and of the dedication the players have shown all season.

“We are very proud of our kids, these kids give us everything they have all the time. We, as a team, have had several battles and distractions this season as well as setbacks. the Bulldogs have never given up, have never quit,” Coach Hawkins said. “I can't say enough about each one of these young men and the dedication that they have put into the season thus far.”

The live auction brought in $2,245.

Jeter would like to thank the Cub Scouts Pack 789 for leading the Pledge of Allegiance this year. Also a big thank you to our entertainment for the day, DJ Big Ant, and the band Fear Not.  We would also like to thank Buddy and Marilyn Johnson for running our live auction this year.  They did a wonderful job. Jayne Palmer, our local ACS Staff Partner, was very helpful through our journey in 2017 and we can’t wait to work with her again.
