Yoemen overwhelmed in loss to China Spring

Throughout the first two weeks of the season, China Spring has been one of the more dominating teams in the state of Texas.  The Cougars had rolled by rival Lorena in week one and followed that up with another thrashing of Huntsville in week two.

Not much changed on Friday night from Yoe Field, as the Cougars continued that streak of impressive victories in an overpowering 63-13 victory over the Yoemen.

Even before the opening kickoff of this highly anticipated matchup, things were not going the way of the Yoemen.  With some confusion on the coin flip, Cameron accidentally decided to kick the ball off to China Spring even though they had deferred to the second half.

#2 ranked China Spring comes to Yoe Field on Friday night

When you look back on last year's football season, there are a couple of games that you will remember as being very competitive.  One of those games was against China Spring in non-district play.  The Cougars ended up being the only team to beat Cameron throughout the regular season up until the state championship game.  By all accounts, it looks like Mark Bell's squad may be improved for 2016.

The Cougars are ranked as high as #2 in the state in some 4A DI polls, and have been one of the most impressive teams in 4A DI throughout the first two weeks of the season.

"They are very well coached as always and their kids play very hard," said Yoe head coach Tommy Brashear.  "In my opinion, they are the best team we played last year, and just by watching them on film, they might be the best team we play again this year."

China Spring (2-0) Vs. Cameron Yoe (2-0)

This will be one of the top matchups in the state for week three.  China Spring has been extremely dominant in their first two games.  The Cougars were leading Lorena in the third, 49-0 and also had a 55-0 lead on Huntsville late.  All in all, this could be one of the better teams Cameron has played in the last 10 years.  I had felt China Spring was the top team Cameron played in 2015 and this year’s Cougar squad appears to be improved and should be a contender to win a regional title and compete for a state championship.  The Yoemen will need...

History of Yoe Football

Following their close loss to Daingerfield in 2010, I should remind you of the spring of 2011. It was the greatest spring ever at Yoe High. It started with the girls basketball team. They won three straight playoff games before falling in the regional finals. The boys team won a couple of games before falling in the regional semifinals.

That brought on track. The girls took home the state championship for Coach Linda Richter after so many district and regional victories. On the same day, the boys took home the third place plaque. The girls had a good playoff run in softball, but the Yoe baseball team matched the girls track victory by winning in their first trip to the state tourney. They were coached by present coach John Broussard.

Yoemen score 42 unanswered to get by Gatesville

A lot of times, a game is a tale of two halves.  We got exactly that on Friday night from McKamie Stadium in Gatesville, as a dog fight through the first half of play ended up being a 69-31 victory for Cameron when it was all said and done.

Throughout the first half of play, both teams traded shots as the lead went back and forth a total of seven different times.  While Gatesville was able to put up more traditional drives, the Yoemen had big strikes. That was highlighted by Sicory Smith's 98-yard touchdown return just before the half ended to give the Yoemen the 27-24 lead.

Cameron Yoe (1-0) Vs. Gatesville (0-1)

Last week’s contest with Bellville went about as well as you could have expected.  It was truly one of the most impressive season openers I have personally seen when you take into account the ranking of Bellville and the fact that the game was on the road.  Defensively, Cameron held what is supposed to be a strong slot-t ground attack to under 150 yards while the offense struck on multiple big plays to put the game out of reach by halftime.  The huge matchup with...

Traditionally tough Gatesville next up for the Yoemen

After picking up an impressive week one win over a top ten 4A division II Bellville squad, the Yoemen will now have to deal with another type of challenge.  Unlike Bellville, Gatesville will not be ranked in any poll that you look at.  However, there has been many years in the past where that was the case, but it was the Hornets that ended up surprising the Yoemen.

In 19 contests, Cameron has an 8-11 all-time record versus Gatesville.

“I coached at Gatesville a couple of years and I really think Cameron kids underestimate them a little bit,” said Yoemen head coach Tommy Brashear.  “When you watch...
