Cameron Yoe Vs. Mexia (at Alvarado)

The time for scrimmages has come and gone, and now we are ready for the start of the 2018 Texas high school football season. Many believe it’s the best time of the year, and the Yoemen have plans on making it a memorable run. Cameron will start that journey tomorrow night by taking on the Mexia Blackcats on the road at Alvarado.

The game was originally scheduled to be played in Mexia, but the new turf was not going to be ready in time. Switching home sites was not really an option for the Yoemen.

“Mexia called and said their field was not going to be ready,” said Yoe coach Tommy Brashear. “He called about switching home games or switching sites and I told him that I would want a neutral site. If I switched home games, that means I would have six at home this year and four at home next year.”

Yoe impresses in Madisonville

The Yoemen hit the road to close out their scrimmage schedule last Thursday in Madisonville. One of the main talking points after week one was to be a week better in week two, and after Thursday it would be hard to say that was not accomplished, as the Yoemen looked impressive on both sides of the ball in what was a five touchdown to zero advantage.

“I think they are a little young this year, but regardless I was looking to see if we were fixing our mistakes, and I feel like we did that tonight,” said Yoe coach Tommy Brashear. “I thought we did some good things in the run game and in the pass game as well. We ran routes better and read things better. I know we still made mistakes because I saw them live, but we will go to work to fix those.”

Soccer registration underway

Soccer registration is now underway for the youth interested in the camp. The deadline to register is Thursday, August 30. You can sign up at the Yoe High Cafeteria on that very night from 5:00-7:00 pm in the last chance registration. The cost per camper is $40 and there is a discount for families with more than one child. Ages 4-13 are eligible to attend. Registration forms are available at the Cameron Library, Classic Bank, Buckholts State Bank, Rockdale Signs & Photography, or the Cameron Elementary or Junior High officers. Mexia game details released

Lorena Vs. Cameron Yoe - Friday - Yoe Field

The Yoemen will finally get to knock around someone other than themselves on Friday when the Lorena Leopards come to town. Under coach Ray Biles, Lorena has always put together a solid product on the field and this will be a good early look for Coach Tommy Brashear and his team.  

The Leopards are returning a total of five starters on each side of the ball from a team that finished with a 5-7 record and an area round loss to Madisonville, 45-35. Lorena is predicted to finish in fourth place in 8-4A DII this year behind Fairfield, Madisonville and Waco Connally, and ahead of Salado, Mexia and Robinson.

AP Football Poll Released

On Monday, the associated press released their preseason football polls for all classifications. This poll is the only one in the state that still combines all teams within both divisions despite the fact that none of the teams will every play each other in the postseason.

The Cameron Lady Yoe have been perfect as of late. Over the weekend, the ladies went a perfect 4-0 in their own tournament and dominated the competition in the process. The Lady Yoe left no doubt in any of their four tournament wins, sweeping the competition 12 sets to zero.  

“This is exciting this year,” said coach Kamol Nohe. “We came in with high expectations with three seniors that have put in a lot of time and effort. It’s time for them to push through and their leadership is helping us solidify and become stronger. We just have to stay focused and build from here.”

Cameron did not let that momentum slip up on Monday when they traveled to Vanguard Prep in Waco, pulling out a four-set win while extending the win streak to five.

Day One

Cameron’s opening two matches the 2018 season did not go as planned, as the Lady Yoe dropped back-to-back contests to Lago Vista and Thrall on Monday.

The ladies were swept by the Lady Vikings, 25-22, 25-20 and 25-13, before falling to Trall, 25-18, 18-25, 20-25, 22-25 to begin the season with an 0-2 mark.

The ladies struggled most of the their opening match with Lago Vista, but picked things up with Thrall, taking the opening set in convincing fashion.

Dach was key at the service line, stringing together 6 consecutive Lady Yoe points to build a 17-14 lead, forcing a Thrall timeout. The lead grew to 19-14 before Dach finally ended her run with a serve into the next.

Carley Tucker, Cameron’s leading returning attacker, had 11 attacks and 7 kills in the first set alone. However, the ladies started to commit errors from that point forward and that was the difference in the end.

Yoe begins two-a-day practices

On Monday, the Yoemen got the first practice of the year under their belts. As you would anticipate for the first day of action, there was a lot of excitement in the air and things went well for the group as a whole.

“It was a great day one,” said third-year head football coach Tommy Brashear. “The kids had a lot of energy, the competition was good, and the leaders were getting the people going. It was a great, upbeat practice. I’m optimistic about day two, but the trick is putting a bunch of those together.”

The numbers once again appear to be solid for the four-time state champs, whom had 102 kids out for the first day of workouts.
