John David Thompson

John David Thompson, 79, of Cameron died Friday, Dec. 14, 2018, at his home.  Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Marak. Burial will follow in the Ss. Cyril & Methodius Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 17, with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home.

Mr. Thompson was born Oct. 15, 1939, in Cameron to Henderson and Theresa (Matula) Thompson. He graduated from C.H. Yoe High School. He married Jo Ann Puckett on Jan. 17, 1961, and she preceded him in death in 2010. He served in the Army National Guard. He worked for Alcoa for 38 years and was a member of the Local United Steelworkers #3895. He was a member of the Cameron Volunteer Fire Department for 38 years. He was a member of Saints Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. 

His brother, Jimmy Thompson, also preceded him in death in 2007.

Judy Faye Ramsey

Judy Faye Ramsey, 63, of Cameron died Friday, Dec. 14, 2018, at her home.  Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home with Rev. Betty Wenzel officiating. Burial will follow in the Pebble Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ms. Ramsey was born April 2, 1955, in Dimmitt, Texas, to Virgil and Elouise (Lyles) Pevehouse. A homemaker, she worked also as a caregiver and Apartment Manager. She was a member of Grace Church in Cameron. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Roy Dean Pevehouse; and a sister, Mary McAnulty. 

She is survived by: sons, Robert Elliston and wife Lori of Rockdale and Brad Elliston of Cameron; brothers, Virgil Pevehouse Jr. of Abilene and Kenneth Teal of Cameron; sister, Dorothy Ewald of Caldwell; and four grandchildren, Luke, Isabelle, Levi, and Bryton.

Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home of Cameron is in charge of arrangements.

Peggy Matula

Peggy Matula, 85, of Cameron died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018, in a Cameron nursing and rehab center. 

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron with Rev. Tim Cheatham officiating. Burial will follow in St. Monica’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Matula, a retired waitress, was born Nov. 1, 1933, in Milam County to Jack and Maude (Springer) Ingram. She married Albert Frank Matula and he preceded her in death in 2012.

She is survived by son, Bubba Shuffield of Cameron; step-sons, Al Matula Jr. of Cameron and Joe Matula of Cameron; daughter, Cindy Cryer of Cameron; step-daughters, Cynthia Matula of Mineola, Carolyn Bowen of Grapevine, Kathy Kirk of Cameron and Patricia Hays of Cameron; 11 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home of Cameron is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Ann Plachy

Mary Ann Plachy, 91, of Cameron, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2018, at a Cameron nursing and rehab facility. 

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Marak with Rev. Darrell Kostiha officiating.  Burial will follow in the Sts. Cyril & Methodius Cemetery near the church. Rosary was recited at at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home on Sunday night.

Mrs. Plachy, a homemaker, was born Oct. 31, 1927, in Jordanton, Texas, to Joseph and Eva (Michalik) David. She married Jerry Edward Plachy on April 12, 1949, and he preceded her in death.

She had worked as a nurse for several years and later she had worked in a local dress factory for several years. She was a member of Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church where she was a member of the St. Ann’s Altar Society.  She was also a member of K.J.Z.T.

Martin Dean Hobbs

Services for Martin Dean Hobbs, age 84, of Thorndale were held Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2018, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with Rev. Mark Porterfield officiating. Burial followed in the Pleasant Retreat Cemetery. Public visitation was held on Monday at the funeral home.

Martin was born Sept. 15, 1934, south of Thorndale, and was the son of Jess and Olga (Schramm) Hobbs. 

He was a graduate of Thorndale High School. He lived most of his life in the Thorndale area except for 25 years he lived in Houston and managed a Whites Store. 

After moving back toThorndale he became a rancher until he retired. He and Wanda Shirley were married on May 29, 2003, in Cameron. Martin was a member of the Pleasant Retreat United Methodist Church, a veteran of the United States Army and served Milam County as Justice of the Peace in Precinct 4 for 14 1/2 years. He was a member of the Houston Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd degree Mason.

Robert E. Jack

Robert E. Jack (1944 – 2018) passed away on Nov. 5, 2018. 

Bob was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma in 2012 and for six years fought the disease stoically.

Bob is loved and missed by K Jack, his wife and best friend for the past 27 years. He is also loved and missed by his sons, Russell (wife Kim Perras) and Paul Jack (wife Kristie-Kimbell); his grandchildren, Isabel and Emily Jack, Rachel, Brodie, and Maggie Kimbell-Jack, and Kyle and Aidan Perras. 

Bob Jack: devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and story teller; LT US Navy 1966-76; Baylor Law School Cum Laude 1977; Sailing Cruiser and Valiant enthusiast 1993-2018.

Evelyn Mae Burnett

Evelyn Mae Burnett, 84, of Cameron died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018, in Temple.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018, at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron with Billy Crouch and Richard Darst officiating. Burial followed in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation was held Friday, Nov. 16, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Burnett was born Jan. 27, 1934, in Milam County to Ladis and Millie Klapka.  She married James Walter Burnett on Sept. 2, 1954.  She had worked as an insurance clerk for Dr. Sidney Richardson’s office for many years and was a member of the First Baptist Church where she served and participated in many ministries.

She is survived by: her husband, Walter Burnett of Cameron; son, Larry Burnett of Beckville; daughter, Joyce Fritz of Cedar Park; and three grandchildren.

Avys Locke

Avys Locke, age 90, of Milano, passed away Monday, Nov. 19, 2018, at her home in Milano.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2018, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with Rev. Roy Dillard officiating. Burial will be in the Liberty Cemetery near Milano. Visitation will also be Friday from noon until service time at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Avys Locke was born Sept. 18, 1928, in Milano to Claude and Bertha (Reese) White. She graduated from Milano High School. She received her B.A. from Southwest Texas State University and her M.A. from Sam Houston State University. Avys lived in Bryan and Madisonville before returning to Milano. She taught English for a number of years at North Zulch School in Madison County.  She then worked for Teacher’s Service Center and served as librarian for many years in small school districts.  She retired from this job.  She was a member of the Liberty Church near Milano.

Virgil Pevehouse

Virgil Pevehouse, 94, of Cameron, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018, at his home.  Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron. Burial will follow in the Pebble Grove Cemetery near Maysfield. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Pevehouse was born Dec. 2, 1923, in Milam County to John and Ina Sapp Pevehouse. He worked at Wall Lake Doors as a security guard for several years before going to work for the City of Cameron, from which he retired. 

He was preceded in death by a son, Roy Dean Pevehouse, and a daughter, Mary McAnulty. He was also preceded in death by six siblings, Jesse Pevehouse, Mildred Yates, Ruth Mosley, Alma Patzke, John Pevehouse Jr., and Nathan Pevehouse.

Paul Caven Freeman

Paul Caven Freeman, 79, passed away Friday, Nov. 9, 2018.

Paul is survived by his "current" wife of 57 years, Carole Richards Freeman; son, Christopher Caven; and  daughter, Shannon Leigh. He is also survived by his sister, Beverly Shelton and her husband Bob; plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. His parents Tyson and Lois Freeman preceded him in death.
